JemJen24I am glad you asked the question because I have been wondering about it myself.  So far I have always gone with my grandkids (teenagers) but someday would like to have the courage to go alone.
I heard another tip that I have not seen here -- a HUGE dog water bowl and a VERY heavy dog chain outside the camper!  Sounded good to me!

Gamecock CamperMy daughter and I usually camp alone and have, thankfully, never run into any problems.  I feel much better when we have our dogs along for the trip but we can t always bring them.  My concerns have always been for our safety alone in the woods at night.  I never even considered the possibility that we wouldn t be able to tow, set up, or take down.  If I had thought of that we might never have gone on that first trip![;)]

Gatsmommy

Gamecock CamperI ve gone out twice without DH, but both times I met people from the board at the campground. That one made my mom nervous, I m going camping with people I met online while DH s on a business trip  LOL[:D] Honestly I wouldn t go without our dog though. One one of those trips I had some " interesting"  looking men camped next to me that he growled at (and he loves everyone).  He s my saftey device.  Having something else like pepper spray scares me that they would get to it first and use it on me or DS.

With the old camper I did need help setting it up and taking it down, but then so did my DH. I can tow it and if needed I can back it up....it just takes a while.

I have yet to try it with the new one, but if DH starts traveling again, now that I can put it up myself I ll be out there. It s MUCH better then listening to a 2 yr old ask for daddy all weekend.

Gamecock CamperI ve been thinking about this and realized that I purposely chose an 8-footer because it was well within my comfort zone.

Because it s lighter, it s also easy to crank and I don t have things like flushable portapottis, hot water heaters, showers, tip-outs and other things that might make it a more monumental task for a single person - male or female - set up.

Of course, my ex has a Santa Fe and he has no problems setting it up or backing it - he s been trailering boats for years.

After a year, I still can t back it without frustration.  I kept hoping that it would become second nature.

So....if the physical task of solo camping seems challenging that is understandable.  If it s an emotional thing (woman alone!), my advice is to psyche yourself and go out and explore.  You meet the nicest people, especially if you re alone.

Being an extrovert, I find it easy to meet people.  Last time, I had some extra homemade bread I d been given...and shared it with my neighbors.  (Actually, it was my way of thanking the husband for parking my camper[;)]

If you re used to camping with hubby and/or kids....try and envision the luxury of doing what you want, when you want, and how you want.  Or, better yet, deciding to do nothing at all.

I wouldn t worry to much. If you do decide to take some kid of incapacitating spray. Use pepper spray. In the small confinds of a camper spraying mace will properly affect you as much as the intruder. And what ever you do don t take a hand gun.  Buy the time you would get it out the intruder would be to close for you to use it.  Different states have differant laws on the carrying of a fire arms. With your dogs with you anyone who might try something will properly think twice once they here a dog barking.  if you have proplems on the road make sure you have a cell phone and call for help .Yhen stay in your car till help arrives.

JemJen24As a wife of a Locomotive Engineer,  I can t plan around him either, he has no set time to work or be home when the trains go he has to go.

I love to camp.  I take my two sons now 10 and 12 and go.  I enjoy this time together.  I always take a weapon with me, just for safety, because we go on long distance trips.

Just be careful no matter where you go, in todays world you can never be to careful even at campgrounds.(Sad but true)

 FUNNY!!!!!!!!
I am a single girl and I don t have a problem camping alone.  For the most part, I feel pretty safe in most public campgrounds and state parks.  I also camp on private land owned by my family, so I don t have a problem there.  The only time I don t think I would want to go out alone is if it were to camp in an unknown place were there wouldn t be very many people around (if any).  I don t think I would do that by myself, but otherwise I m okay with it.

I like to take my bigger dog with me (she s a wirehair pointer) and we just have a blast spending time together and hiking.  Even when I camp by myself, I don t truly feel alone.  I enjoy talking to and meeting new people at the campgrounds.

.....and if anyone did ever think they could try to assault or hurt me....well.......I m pretty deadly with a fork..LOL[;)][:D]

 Really, I ve never had a problem...Go for it.....it FUN!![:D][:)]

We can supply the dog to go with it (170lbs)

What are the ages of your grandchildren?  My DD likes to camp if her schedule allows -- she will start UC this month.

ALSO, WANTED TO MOVE THIS BACK UP TO THE TOP FOR ANYONE WHO IS NEW

angelsmom10,
Just saw your question -- my granddaughters are 14 and 15.  Good ages -- I really enjoy them.
I reread the posts in this thread -- good advice.  It was good to refresh my memory.

angelsmom10Great timing, Angelsmom ... just started getting my act together for my first solo trip!  Coming up in a few weeks.

I did decide to leave the PU at home and take a tent.  Too much work for me for a weekend ... the important part was being alone and enjoying the natural world around me.  Didn t really need a PU for that!
