I know I asked about this on the old board and like I ve said before, the memory isn t what it used to be so bear with me as I ask again.....

Do you (y all?) take your own fire wood or do you buy it at your destination?  We bought what ever was available last  year but after getting lots of wet or bad wood, we bought a truck load from a local fire wood vendor. $55 for a HUGE pile.

Now my second question:  how do you transport wood if you take your own?  I bought a big Rubbermaid container but it doesn t fit in the front trunk of the Cheyenne. DH suggested putting the loose wood in the front trunk but my arguement for that was that it would be very time consuming to unload before we could pop up. I thought we could put it in the back of the Jeep but DH fears it would be a hazard (in the event of an accident) for the dog who rides back there.  The box is in the camper now, just inside the door and it ll be the first thing to be taken out at the cg.

We re going out for the first trip of the season on Friday, can t wait!!!!!!

springer02We generally buy our wood at/near the campground.  I have plenty of other things to transport with us, don t need a rubbermaid container full of wood to weigh us down more!  Besides, the only good place to put it would be in our van and, like you, our dogs ride in the back.  Some friends of ours have a Didge caravan and they loaded the wood in the passenger compartment, where the seats were.  I just couldn t help but think it was a bad idea in the event of an accident.

springer02It really comes down to cost vs. convenience.  Since we have firewood delivered to our house a cord at a time, the cost of burning firewood at a camping site insignificant.  We fill a big Rubbermaid container with firewood and load the container into the cargo bay of our tow vehicle.  Our container has wheels on one end, which makes it easier for toting it around the campground.  It also keeps the cargo bay clean.

We would rather accept the inconvenience of bringing our own firewood than paying outrageous prices for dubious quality firewood.

springer02We buy ours at teh cg.  Sometimes we get great wood that burns beautifully; other times, we ve been life or death to get the stuff to catch!  Oh well, I guess we re just living life on the edge!

CampinCrazy

springer02We try to make friends with people who live on several acres and need help with trees.  The TV is usually some type of pickup so we always bring at least some wood.  Space does become an issue, tho.

springer02I have access to about a 2 yr supply, and we re still cutting more. Right now, 2 5er s, 2 TT s and 4 pop-ups all use that pile(acquired from various sources). Usually, I m one of the few that has to split it.[:@]
As far as transporting, I usually stack a pile in the front of the truck box. Since it s also my work truck, I really don t mind the mess.[;)]

springer02We had a number of storms a few years back and I was able to round up enough downed trees to get over 2 cords of wood. For free! All I had to do was cut and split it, which was a chore so I guess it wasn t totally for free. We re getting down to the last little bit of it though, so I ll need to go with plan B soon (we have enough for 1, maybe 2, more trips).

Transporting it to the CG isn t a problem; I ve got a fullsize 1 ton pickup, so I can take as much as we can fit. But with 4 females (a wife and 3 daughters) who " need"  to take darn near everything in the house when we go camping the space in the bed of the truck fills up faster then you might imagine. [:o]

springer02Generally we buy it at or near the CG.  A number of years back we were camping at Mammoth Cave National Park, they don t sell firewood in or near the park.  You are told to pick it up in the woods.  All the State Parks would throw you out for doing such a thing.

The only thing I want to bring is kindling.  With a major house project this year I have a lot of old base board.  Now, that s expensive wood![:D]

springer02When we first started camping, we purchased the wood near home and carried it to the CG.  However, this takes ALOT of space in the van (especially if we are going on a long trip) and the stuff is not light.  I felt bad for poor old Bertha (our van) as we labored up Mount Palomar with 1/4 cord of firewood in the back!

Since then, I have found it 100 times more enjoyable to buy the wood at the CG.  After all, it saves me from (1) Buying the wood near home and loading it up. (2) Using the extra gas to haul it wherever, (3) having to UNLOAD the damn stuff to get to the rest of the gear out of the Van, (4)  having enough wood for the whole trip piled up at the campsite, and (5) having to cart the stuff I don t use back home again, which effectively is repeating steps 1-3.

Now I just go there.  Buy enough wood each day for that day s wood burning activities, and leave empty handed.  No bark and tree sap all over the back of the van, no strained muscles from loading and unloading massive quanities of wood, and it s easier on Old Bertha as well.

Although, I have to admit that many times the CG wood is very wet and difficult to light.  However, if you are well prepared with kindling, you can burn just about anything.

springer02We do some of both.  I take 2 containers of wood with us on most trips.  I haul the wood in the PU most of the time.  We buy more if we need to.  If we are at the local SP then I have DH bring a load of wood in his truck.

springer02Not sure where all my replies are going tonight, but this is my second one on this thread!
If I m camping in a state Campgound, I buy wood. I figure with cutbacks they probably need all the help they can get. The exception is Massachusetts state CG s! If they sell wood at all it s $5.00 for a bag of 5 pieces!!!
If it s a privately owned CG, I ll buy it if the price is fair, Otherwise you can usually find someone near the CG selling wood for $2.00 a bundle!
It isn t worth the wear and tear to haul it!

Camperroo

springer02we do both bring and buy.  DH likes to chop wood, so sometimes we bring up some that needs to be split.

springer02We have done everything, wood in the back of the truck, wood just inside the popup door, bought at the campground, bought near the campground.  Alot has to do with what we have in the yard or where we are going, you get to know where you can get good wood and where you can not.

MtnCamper

springer02We have a local tree trimmer, who s kids cut up and dry (what you buy is at least a year old) the trees they trim. Split too. Good price, and gives the kids some cash. So call a trimmer. Maybe his kids do the same. They will even deliver and stack. Or they will help you load it at their place.

springer02We just cut down a tree or two and that lasts us a couple of times while we are at the lake. Last year Uncle Olen, cousin in law Tracy, cousin Donny, cousin Jason, cousin in law Steve and cousin Michael did the wood cutting on the lots. One lot (the one I use) was one that my uncle bought (got it at a steal for $300) and the other was the lot between mine and Uncle s other two lots. We also cleared out bushes, stumps etc. The lot of Non looks pretty good now, won t the owners be suprised since it looked like a jungle before! The convenant says " you may improve any lot that is unattended"  which means as long as we don t cut down all the trees we are safe. We are hoping to buy the Lot of Non if we can ever get a hold of the owners.

We are watching other lots to see if owners are attending to them or not, if not then we will " improve"  those lots also. A friend of mine has a lot across from us and they never go camping there (can t figure that one out) and we did cut down some trees that were damaged by the ice storm. When I told her she said " GREAT!! My husband was dreading doing that!"  So we get thanks for our hard work. [:D]
