Anybody have any advise on bike racks for our Coleman Yuma 03 model or our Jeep Cherokee Sport?

I ve heard that the Yakima bike racks work well for on top of the Colemans.

I did a search on Ebay and found TONS of different Yakima bike racks.  How do I know which one to purchase and what hardware should it include?

JemJen24If you go to www.yakima.com you can check out the different bike trays there.  You will need to get 2 crossbars installed on the roof of your trailer too.  The system works great.  The only drawback is you have to remove the bikes before you PU and you need to put them up there after you pop down.  When I had them on the roof of the TV I could pack them the night before.  It doesn t really take that long to do though.

The Overmans

JemJen24My family of 5 has a bike rack on our Utah.  It works quite well however, if you have small children (say 4 - 8) the bike may not fit as well as an adult bike.  Our rack only holds 4 bikes, so I ended up purchasing a additional rack that straps on the back doors of the surburban.  When we went camping about 3 weeks ago it was great for all 5 of us to ride[:)]

JemJen24We just added a Yakima rack to our Bayside and it is quite a heavy duty setup.  I did have to purchase the Yakima cross bars from the Coleman dealer, since it comes as a kit with the required risers (cross bar mounts), bolts, sealant tape, etc..  The crossbar kit was about $115 from the dealer.  We purchased 4 Yakima Lockjaw bike holders on eBay for about $150.

I went back and forth over doing the crossbar install myelf or taking it to a dealer.  I took a deep breath and drilled the holes through the roof, and I have to say it was amazingly simple.  One word of advice.... mark the location of the holes before you put on the tacky sealant tape.

I have had a Thule rack on the car for years and believe that both Thule and Yakima offer excellent products.  I don t think Thule makes a rack for PU s.

It will be nice not to have to struggle with hauling bikes this year!

 JemJen24ennifer,

Your 03 Coleman has the rack rails on the top of the PU already. You will need to order the crossbar kit from Coleman for $85? and then add whatever accesories you would like to that.

I have found out that Yakima " rail riders"  will work on the Coleman tracks. You just need to use the short screws supplied on the tie down plates. These are about $115.00 and doesn t include the crossbars. 78"  crossbars are what you need. These are more expensive but may be worth it because you can add locking cores so that they won t get stolen. Keep in mind that each locking core is also about $10.00 each though.

I have the Yakima crossbars that I got from Coleman as well as 2- Lockjaw bike racks, 1- Raptor Bike Rack and 2 Ankle Biter bike racks. The Ankle Biters are the best but also the heaviest. If you only have two bikes, my vote would be for the ankle biters.

Still sitting down? Now you need to add locking cores to these as well so no one walks off with your bikes. That s right, $10.00 more for each core and you need one for each rack.

The Yakima crossbars that Coleman sells will most likely not walk off. They are on tight and you do need the special allen key/wrench tool to remove/move the bars once installed. It s simple to do yourself also.

Hopefully not too much of a ramble here but I m trying to get out the door.

 Thanks

Matt I don t think the Destiny series has the rack rails.  Only the Grand Tour and Grand Tour Elite have them.

JemJen24thnks for all the advice.   I m going to print this out and give it to the hubby to look it over.

One question.  Our Jeep has two rack bars (?) that go across on the roof.  I thought these were luggage racks.  Could we purchase something to mount the bikes on there instead?

well, no matter what, I ll print this and give it to Willard.

 Thanks again!

PS....we have a Destiny model, and it doesn t have the bars on top (sniff)

JemJen24Yes you should be able to get adapters to attach bike trays to your roof rack.  Go to www.yakima.com and they have a program to fit a rack to your vehicle.

I used a 96 Cherpkee sport as a tow vehicle and purchased the Thule Rack Pack, model 889.  This comes with hardware to mount two Thule velo vise tray racks to the stock luggage rack.  It comes with one velo vise tray rack.  You can buy another tray and mount two bikes.  This is the limit of using the stock luggage rack.

 Take a look here http://www.prolineracks.com/bigmouthrackpack.html

This is the Big Mouth version but they have one with the Velo vise.

 Hope this helps.

Just don t forget the bikes are up there if you have a garage.  We have a fellow in our church that removed his bikes off his Accord three times by hitting the top of the garage doorway with them.
