Was anything ever determined about using Netscape with the board?  Blacks and greens are not attractive.

I use Internet Explorer, but Paula uses Netscape, so until I tried using Netscape, I had no clue of how bad it was.

 Any advice, welcome.

 Thanks,

wynotWhat version of Netscape is being used ?
I use 7.0 and it looks fine....maybe it s time to update Netscape.

wynot

wynot4.7.6 and only on the forums board.

Wayfarer

wynotI have both Netscape 4 and Netscape 6.  Netscape 4 is much faster but has older features and on the PUT board I get the black and green - not at all easy to read.  Using Netscape 6, however, everything is normal (?), or just as it was before the change to the new stuff.  In both the actual threads or post look the same, but the first index in each category (i.e., General or Camfire etc., which lists the different threads) are real weird in Netscape 4 - that black and green bit that s very hard to read.  So...for PUT I use Netscape 6.

BTW, going to PUX every now and then, either Net 4 or 6 works great.  Go figure?

Upgrade to a version from this century? [:D] Isn t Netscape 4.x from the late 1990 s?

Wayfarer

wynotYeah, Netscape 4 is from the last century.  Sounds like some folks are like my daughter: Got to have all the latest with all the bells and whistles regardless of the cost, problems, etc.  With Net 4 you get the basics and the basics only - a good browser that works fast and reliably.  With the newer versions you get all kinds of junk, most of which has nothing to do with what you want the browser for in the first place.  Kinda like the new cars out each year - make something different, whether it has any function or not, just so the gullible will by it and trade in their " old"  outdated last years model.  And it works - with some folks!

Oh, well, different strokes...etc.  Uh, oh!  That different stokes bit is from the last century and will certainly date me.  Next thing you know I ll be banned from the forum and consigned to the archives!

wynotWayfarer the problem is programmers don t program for older versions. the same as everything else sooner or later progress forces you into the 21st century.  I d love to use my old Commedores and Apples or even my 286 & 386 computers but no such luck.

wynotNetscape 7 works well, but even it lack features that IE 6 has.  IE will let you expand the subject and see who has posted to the thread, and just read 1 post. Netscape 4x might be from the last century, but I much prefer it s mail and news reader to either Netscape 7 s or Outlook.

wynot

wynotOK, I  upgraded   (that s questionable) to Netscape 7.0.

So after almost 4 hours of download time on a very nice dial up connection, I now have a browser that is confusing, takes a lot longer to load anything, but it does show PUT correctly!

I think I m going to default the home connection to IE as well.

Having spent a lot of time working for computer OEMs  and other companies heavily dependent on commercial software applications, I have to agree.

Back in the days of candles, and handcranked generators when I was programming, we had to fit stuff in less than 4K.  Programmers have gotten sloppy and backwards compatibility is now a luxury.

I have a great indestructable 386/40 machine that is lightning fast on Windows 3.1!
