We d like to camp in Vermont this July (going North to avoid the severe heat!).  Would you please recommend FAMILY-FRIENDLY campgrounds?  We ve only camped once so far, so please take that into consideration.  We live about 45 miles outside Philadelphia, so if you can provide length of drive from here, or even better, a website link so we can do a map query, that would be great.

Thanks from the NEWBIE, but HAPPY campers,

I looked through it but I really didn t see much on VT campgrounds.  There is one thread on VT State Campgrounds.

my4cutiesOur children are 12 and 9, so we aren t particularly concerned with playgrounds or even pools at campgrounds, so I m not sure what I can offer, but I can tell you where we have stayed.

 Kampersville Campground-  http://www.kampersville.com/
near Lake Dunmore- we found nice hiking there and a nice lake where you can rent paddle boats and rafts. They have an " interesting"  collection of talking (ie- noisy) birds. Lots of seasonal campers here, and they were very nice to us.

 Camperama http://www.gocampingamerica.com/camperama/index.html
We weren t able to stay long here- very quiet, on a river near Bald Mountain, which we have hiked, with the kids. We still want to go back here- cleanest bathrooms we ve ever seen.

 White River Valley Camping- http://www.sover.net/~river/
On the White River- great for tubing in July with the winter run off. We stayed here over a Columbus Day weekend and it snowed. We liked it- quiet and very woodsie. They have a small gameroom, playground and HUGE rabbits.

We are going to try this place in July this year: http://www.riversbendcampground.com/index.html

I ll be sure to post a review.

my4cutiesLaurie, I will e-mail you in May - we are going up there (hopefully) then and since our kids are around the same age we proberly would stay at similar type of campgrounds.  Also - being from New England - you might escape a bit of the heat, but we ll clobber you with the humidity!!  [:D] [;)] You have A/C in the new PU, right??!! [:D]

my4cutiesHi Mark & Laurie! Having lived in Florida, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, I can understand your desire to get away from the Heat and Humidity! I now live in Vermont and wish the snow would leave!!! It s supposed to snow here this Wednesday & Thursday!
I have 4 Grandchildren from 3 years old to 11, and since they live in the city, 2 in Phoenix and 2 in New Jersey, they like to camp with us in the Vermont State Parks rather than a campground with busy pools, roads, etc. They have a fast enough pace where they live, they just want to relax and do some " campfire TV"  watching, pond or lake swimming or wading, short little hikes through the woods, etc. They dislike the private parks where you have to fight for a space in the pool. They see that enough at their homes!
Just a thought and a vote against the so called Family style private campgrounds! I think the State Parks are more family styled because families have to entertain themselves not BE entertained.

my4cutiesWe have a summer cottage on Lake Dunmore and there is definately a lot of family things to do there.  Kampersville is a very  commericalized CG that just about over runs the whole North Cove of the lake.  A bit much for my taste but is very popular and they do have many repeat visitors.  If you like a little slower pace, Branbury state park on the West cove is very nice with a huge swimming beach, play area and at the foot of Mt Moosalamoo.  Many hiking trails start at the cg and the Falls of Lana are less than a 1/4 mile.  If a boat rental is in your plan,  Waterhouse s will help you out.  The lake fishing is good but don t except me to give up any secret spots just yet!  Neshobe Golf course in Brandon, Vt isn t bad either.  Hope this helps out.  Sorry I didn t include any links but a quick google should fix that.

my4cutiesMy favorite Vermont campground is [link=http://www.gonecamping.net/reviews/newengland/coolidge_sp.html]Coolidge State Park[/link] in Plymouth Notch Vt... It s high up on a mountain top, which makes for cool weather camping, has great views, and if you re lucky enough, you get a lean-to on the site. No Hook-ups here, but very nice dry camping!!! Oh, and they have hot showers (coin operated if I remember correctly)...
