Civil_War_BuffWelcome aboard Ralph!  I also remember you.
Larry - LOL!  You and Ralph stood around looking at his heater on his Coleman Caravan trying to appear like you guys actually knew something about heaters.

TOS, I have no idea what your job is.  What exactly is it that you do which requires this fascination with tides and boat noise levels and heaven only knows what else!?!??

He s the Harbor Master/Operation s Manager for the Ventura Port District.  He s been there for 24 plus years.  That to me is WAY too long to be anywhere.

DO???  I know he reads the posts, goes out on the boat, eats lunch at The Greek, drives around on the beach in the truck where all the girls are in bikinis, rides the jet ski, goes to conference at fancy resorts always with an ocean view, sits quietly and contemplates life as he gazes out his office window that overlooks the Harbor and takes Timmy to dinner on Valentine s day.  Other than that... I haven t a clue!

One of the single guys used to use this line, " I drive a rescue boat for a living."   For a one-line summary, that would be a good summary.

QuoteHow about water depth, or what the sea floor is made of...topography...I guess...I took an oceanography class about 20 years ago, but that is all I remember....

 Sorry Holly..not close

QuoteCould it be the season?

 Surfcal---good guess, but not right.

QuoteThat would have to be the centrifugal force of the earth spinning.

Oh Kevin---so close, and since no one else is trying to answer, I ll give you a bonus point and open the beverage of you choice for you.

The exact answer is centripetal force--which is the force caused by the earth traveling around the sun in a circle--the ball on a string trick.  Here is the odd fact.  Centripetal force has a greater effect than the gravitational pull of the sun, which is why there are higher tides during FULL MOONS, when the moon and sun are on opposite sides of the earth, than during NEW MOONS when the sun and moon are pulling together.
