We are getting ready to head out to Big South Fork (Bandy Creek CG) in Tennessee next week for five nights then on to Mammoth Cave NP for three nights.  Can t wait.  Our youngest son is going with us (he s 34 and our baby) but it will be his first vacation in what seems like forever.  Calling all single girls [:D].  We will be doing a lot of hiking in Big South Fork and taking the cave tour (of course) through Mammoth.  Can t wait.  I don t even care if the weather is terrible.  Seems like a long time between trips this time and we just got back from Cades Cove a couple of weeks ago.  I hope everyone on this board gets a chance to get out and camp as soon as possible too.

slowpezWe spent a few days at Mammoth Cave NP last summer, where we met up with GeeMan (from the pre-paid days).  We love caves (but are not true spelunkers) and make a point to see as much as possible of any cave we visit.

Mammoth was one of the poorest we ve seen as far as speleotherms (cave formations) are concerned.  The cave exists beneath a hard caprock that prevents most speleotherms form forming.  On the other hand, it is long...very long.  There are parts of it that are wide and tall enough to fit an interstate highway inside, other parts that require single file passage.

PJay, GeeMan, and the girls did some touring on a wild cave tour there that required crawling on their bellies for significant distances in passages less than 18 inches high.  That kind of tour requires you to be physically fit and definitely not claustrophobic.  The full tour is close to three hours long.  If you are interested, you must have reservations.

I would have loved to go, but someone had to stay with DS (12 YO) who was not old enough to go (min age was 16). [>:]  We went on a different tour and did a little hiking down to and along the river.

slowpezThanks for the info on the cave.  We have already made reservations (my hubby thinks of everything before I know where we are going.)  Am really just looking forward to getting the heck out of Dodge [&:].

slowpezWe go to the Big South Fork every few years. If it rains there is a train trip to Sterns inside the park.  There are several natural bridges in the northern section that we hike to when we are there also.
