 iwantapopupHI LINDA,
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE DO ADVISE.  I THINK YOU RE RIGHT...BETTER TO HAVE A BIG ENOUGH DO (THE 12" ) THAN HAVE ONE TOO SMALL, ESPECIALLY SINCE WE CAMP WITH ANOTHER FAMILY & SPLIT THE MEALS.
 THANKS AGAIN!

whitestar505THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE DO ADVICE!! WE APPRECIATE IT - HAPPY CAMPIN !

GNAPLUS2While I prefer the Lodge DO s, I have a DO I got at Costco when they first came out. Be sure to check the DO as many of them have warped lids. If the DO is a deep DO, remember you ll need to add more coals on top than for a regular DO. The one I got from Costco has a warped lid, but I didn t notice it at first. The main difference between the China DO s and Lodge is quality. The Lodge DO s are a finer grain and better finishing.

I own 13 DO s including the MACA and 2 aluminum. Use them all.

GNAPLUS2We just came back from our 2003 Southern California Rally and Oldmoose did a DO seminar that was SUPER!!!  We had purchased a DO from Costco 2 years ago and had never used it.  After taking Moose s class we went home and looked at it.  Sure enough the lid was warped and didn t fit tightly.  Last night my dh went to Sportmart and they had a Lodge 8 qt DO for $39.95.    The nice part about the Costco one is it came in a case, so, we put the new Lodge DO in the case and now have the best of both[:)]

GNAPLUS2We enjoyed Moose and Moosette s DO demo so much, that tonight at home, we decided that we d break out 2 of the DOs Dave had bought after we saw (and tasted!) Moose s DO excellent DO creations from way back when at our Casitas rally.  Well, we kind of just started dumping in rice, chicken, veggies and a couple of cans of cream of whatever soup, guessed about the number of coals (I seem to remember Paula saying something about the number of the size DO for the bottom and then minus three for the top).  Well, it was delicious!  We also made a cherry cobbler where you throw in a can of cherry filling, dump a dry cake mix on top, spread some butter pats on the top and then cook it, and even that was great!  We even invited my mom up for dinner to be our guinea pig, and she loved it!

We re gong camping next weekend, and I see a little DO cooking in store for us on Saturday evening! [;)]

GNAPLUS2PS  The most important thing I learned from Bill andPaula s DO demo?  That it s pronounced Lodge, like yo-yo, and not Lodge, like lop-sided. [;)]

oldmoose

griffsmomWay to go Lori. They only way to learn how to cook in a DO is to use it. Nice work.

You can find them at Wal-Mart for about $5.  The cheap ones work exactly the same as the expensive ones. [;)]

GNAPLUS2Well, boy!  Did I ever hit the jackpot for Mother s day!  I got what I asked for; a whole front garden fully planted with flowers, and what I wanted, but didn t ask for, a new, LODGE Dutch oven!  I m so excited.

But I have a question for oldmoose et al.  We got a Lodge, but it appears the lid is in fact warped.  I kind of had the impression that that wasn t a problem with the Lodges.  Maybe I m interpreting the fact that I can " rock"  the lid back and forth as warped when in fact I just don t have it seated properly?

Don t want to season it if I m going to need to return it.  Can someone let me know how to tell if it s warped?

oldmoose

griffsmomIf it wiggles side to side, you re fine. Any gaps between the top and the base should be the same all the way around. My Lodges move some, but not like the ones from China.
 Hope that helps.

Tracy and David

 oldmooseThanks, Moose!

We ended up exchanging it just to be safe, and the new one doesn t rock at all, so I feel better.

It s funny, it s supposed to be MY mother s day gift, but David had it out of the box reading the directions on how to season it the moment we got it home!  I made him wait because I remembered you said it was better to be out of the house while it s baking in the oven.  I m emailing you right now for that peach cobbler recipe.  I m jealous that Lori got to have it for Mother s Day.  I  guess we ll have to have it for Monday!  ( course we forgot to buy charcoal while we were out, so it may end up being for Tuesday!!!)

GNAPLUS2Austin said: If the CostCo set is the same one as BJ s Wholesale Club (comes in a nice wooden box), it is junk.

Looks like the same one that Sam s Club now has for $19.21.  Couldn t find it on their website....no legs on the DO.
