sandykayakIf I need a compass, I use a real one.
A lensatic one with a needle floating in an oil bath.
I can get readings of about 1/4 to 1/3 of a degree.
It fits in the smallest of pockets.
It hangs on a lanyard around my neck.
 It never needs batteries.
 It won t wear out.
I can drop it, soak it, even use it underwater.
And for the price of this one, I can buy five.

I make my living with technology.  As we speak, I own two computers, am responsible for dozens more.  I have a cell phone on my belt, and another cell phone in my briefcase.  But sometimes I just want to get away from all that electronic gobledygook.

 Just my opinion.

sandykayakToo much money. I use a simple Silva compass. And, if the sun comes up there, and goes down there, then I m either going north or south. Or am I dreaming again.

sandykayakI tend to use Bill s method. I figure if I m lost enough in the car (notice the suction cup mounts and the fact you set it by driving in two circles) that I d need a compass it s time to fire off flares and pull the pin on the ERRB.

sandykayakOur TV has one of those digital compass things, along with temperature, gas mileage, trip odomoter, etc, in the overhead console.  Before we had it, I thought the compass in the car was just a useless gadget.  However, having used it for a year or so, I have to say that having a compass direction handy at a glance while driving really helps.   Especially so if driving in an unfamiliar area, and you know that you are supposed to be going in a certain direction.

I like it so much that i too am considering a stick on compass for my old beater truck.  I was hoping to find a cheap one, though...

sandykayakMy truck already has one set to true north calibrated for magnetic variation...It s built into the mirror...Go figure...

I agree with the rest...A good lensatic compass can be pretty handy out in the woods...

 Skol...

sandykayakCompass?  I ve been married to one for 26 years.  Don t you know where you re going?  Turn here, no, over there.  No this way.  I said that way...[:(][:)][:(]

sandykayakWe used to be able to drive a lot. We would go to an area and start taking the small roads to see the country side and all the stuff interstates do not show. That definitely required a Compass in the car to stay oriented and to find our way back to the proper roads.

We have a 10 usd compass thingies on the dasboard of the car which floats in some sort of liquid. It is little bit slow to respond after turns but does so in 10 seconds or so and is very handy. I gotta get another one for the windstar for this upcoming trip.

sandykayakjcwhitney had one on sale at the back of the catalog (found it later) think it was about $30 or so.

i have the floating one that i took off the VW EuroVan camper..somewhere...never got around to gluing it on again.

while i was driving (1,700 miles in a week!) around New Mexico and into Arizona and Colorado...there were several times when i would have liked to check my direction, which is why i liked the suction caps.

thought someone might find a better deal...
