Take a look at this portable hot water heater at Sportsman s Guide.  Weighs 18 pounds.  Looks like it would be versatile, however it is electric and you couldn t use it dry camping unless you had a generator.  Wish it was a little cheaper but it does look like it might be a solution for those who can t give up storage space in their PU.

Has anyone used one of these?

wssfetchThere doesn t appear to be any difference between this electric water heater and any other. Our GE 2.5 gallon one from Home Depot was only $120. A cheaper alternative!

wssfetch

wssfetchOkay, Al, you got my interest.  Is the GE you have portable? I mean not permanently installed in your camper?  Can you hook up a garden type hose to it like the one Sportsman s Guide has?  That s what I am looking for--something I can use outside and in various locations rather than installing in the camper.

wssfetchDon t buy this particular one! That is nothing but a Tiny Titan Water Heater (almost carbon copy, slightly larger capacity), and those are only [link=http://www.lowes.com/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=26349-135-E1E2.5US013V]$128 at Lowes[/link], half the cost of the one advertized...

The Tiny Titan is also electric, plugs into any wall outlet (110vac), but you ll have to buy a couple of parts-n-pieces to get it all connected...

wssfetchWe use a 30 cup coffee maker.  Makes extra hot water in about 45 minutes.  It is great for washing dishes.  Around $30.00 at Wal-Mart.

wssfetch

wssfetchCliff and Al,  thanks for the references to other electric water heaters.  Yep, it does look like a slightly larger Tiny Titan.  So do you have your heaters installed in your campers or do you use them in other ways?  I am more looking for something to heat water outside and deliver the hot water outside--mainly for showers and washing dogs outside at home and at dog shows.  Right now I am using a couple of sun showers.

wssfetchWe have two portable hot water heaters, one is a 20 cent 8 cup percolator from a church rummage sale that heats the water in about five minutes.  I have to add cold to it so I can do dishes and eight cups is then enough to do dishes for two people.  The other is a forty cup coffee maker from our church when we bought a new one and it was free but even if I had bought it new it would not have cost anywhere near that much.  I can just pour more water in as I use water and always have hot water.
I only cook and do dishes inside when we are camping in the winter so having an  water heater that can be used inside or outside is what I need.

topcat7736

 wssfetchSue,

We can use ours wherever there s electric. You need to add fittings, (for the hoses to attach),  to the top of it on both the cold and hot sides. So, I added a short fitting for the hot and a larger " T"  style for the cold (which is in the center of the heater). The " T"  let s me pick it up & carry it along. Went to a Home Depot and got a round, plastic coated wire plant stand (with wheels) which keeps the bottom of the heater from touching the ground (in case it rains) and lets Peggy wheel it around if necessary.

A 2-hour visit to our dealer and I had a hole in the side of the trailer with an electric cord cover installed in it. We open it like we do the electric, pull out the hoses from the mixer faucet, attach to the heater, attach a hose from city water or from a 3.8 gpm Shurflo pump (with its inlet side coming from a 5-gallon water jug), fill it up, plug it in and a few minutes later we have 120 degree water!

The 12v Shurflo water pump (3.8gpm) lets us have running water even when the campground water is turned off for the winter. I have an additional short hose and a squeeze handle nozzle which has about 9 different settings (metal and from Home Depot). When camping in a shelter (with no city water) or tent, I take it along & hook it to the water jug and plug it in to our small battery. Let s Peggy have running cold water, with adjustable spray, for dishes & cleanup. Plus, I can put out the campfire by hosing it down with a spray rather than pouring a bucket of water on it.

What else can I get for the money pit this week? [:(][;)][>:]

wssfetchYou can use a 150 gallon horse trough on a couple of fish cookers[8D] add a trolling motor and you have a jacuzzi[:D][8D][;)]. Until I bought the popup I used to heat water in a 5 gallon galvanized bucket on the campfire or on a white gas stove. It served the purpose! You could rig a solar shower too for your hot water supply. We used 10liter water carriers that were black, laid them on the table in the sun. After 4-6 hours the water was at 130 degrees +.

wssfetchSue, I bought a Zodi Portable propane water heater a while back. I had not used it camping. The other day, the thermostat in our water heater went out after the local hardware had closed. the zodi really impressed me with how fast it heated.
the water, and how easy it was to set up. Take a look and see if this may be
 something you can use.  http://www.zodi.com/

 wssfetchAl,

Thanks for the description.   Now I am wondering if there would be a way to attach the hot and cold water lines to a shower attachment outside the camper so that I could wash dogs with warm water outside.  Ummmmmm.  Maybe I should just stick with the Sun Showers for that.

But....this opens up the possibility of having an outside shower installed on my PU. Have you thought about that one?

topcat7736

 wssfetchSue,

If you have a mixer faucet, there is typically a filter which unscrews on the spout. Once it s unscrewed, you can screw on a hose (with sprayer attachment) and run it under the tenting at a bunkend to the outside. Just set the water temperature before hooking it up!

I ve got my Tiny Titan rigged like the one in [link=http://www.gonecamping.net/images/tinytitan.jpg]THIS PICTURE[/link]....

wssfetch

 wssfetchCliff and Al,

This all souded so complicated, but looking at Cliff s picture and Al s description it is looking easier and easier.  Looks like the city water line has a splitterwith one part going to the Tiny Titan and the other into the city water supply line intake.  And a second supply line receptacle was added for the hot water coming out of the TT.  Right?????

Okay, got to think this thru about whether this is worth it or if I should just keep on using the Sunshowers.  But thanks guys for the hlep.  This is a can do item!!!

wssfetchgee...i coffee, maker....why didn t i think of that....hmmmmm will have to check into this...right now i use galvanized buckets...one for dishes only and one for emergency sponge bathing if the showers turn  out to be disgusting.
