Any recommendations for campgrounds around Hershey Park?
Is the Hershey HighMeadows worth it?

 AdminAdmin,

You might try this web site. I have never stayed here. http://www.campwithrusty.com/

AdminThe HighMeadow campground is the only campground in the area.  There is a KOA about 20 minutes from Hershey, and there is a Thousand Trails campground about 25 minutes away.  The HighMeadow is nice from what I have heard, but there is a train that run right by the campground.  It doesn t seem to bother most people, as the campground is very busy.  They also have a shuttle bus to and from the park, which is very nice, as parking at the park is 6 dollars now I think.  Hope that this helps.  Oh yes, there is a state park about 45 minutes away, Gifford Pinchot, and it is very nice.[8D][8D][8D]

try this review site they have tons of reviews on pa camp grounds as well as the other 49 states!! just click on the state and town......

AdminThanks for the info everyone.  We had booked Ridge Run.  Drove 10 hours down there, arrived at 7 pm to find the campground relatively unacceptable.  The sites were seriously mudfilled, small and difficult to say the least.  There was simply no way our Niagra and GMC Sierra would be fitting.

The fishing pond was a 20 foot sespool with a run down mini-golf lighthouse looking thing in the middle of it.  We asked for a refund and got it promptly
 and left.

We ended up staying at the Hershey/Conewego, soon to be KOA.

Sites were as advertised, not private or very shady, but certainly sufficient in size.
Park seems desgined for larger motor-homes or TT s.  Mini-golf was a run-down mess.  Bathrooms were just plain nasty.  They have a seriously bad eye-sore of a tennis court / basketball court that needs removing.

Owner is a nice gut who is making improvements by the day to comply with KOA.  If your are going to Hershey and just want a predictable, get what you pay for CG, this is a good bet.  Hershey Highmeadow has nicer facilities, is closer, but has the annoying freight train running day and night through it.

If someone opened a great CG in the Hershey area, they would probably make a killing.

AdminI am so sorry to hear about the campgrounds.  A few weeks ago, I talked to my friend who used to work at the Hershey/Conawago Campground.  She said that it use to be a KOA, but they dropped him because of the mess at the campground.  She also said that the bath rooms were awful and only for toilets for the whole campground. She said that the owner was nice enough, but she could no longer work for someone who would not clean up the campground after so many complaints, so she quit.  She got so tired of taking the complaints and nothing being done about it.  " It is the Hershey area...They don t have to do anything....people will come."   Guess she is right.  I think that opening up a great campground in the Hershey area is a great idea...it would be packed all the time.  Wish I could do it, but......[8D][8D][8D]

AdminWe go to Hershey at least once a year and camping is a big problem.  Last year we stayed at the Conewago and the bathrooms were filthy and swore we would never go back.  This year we went to Ridge Run.  Some of their sites were small and we would not of fit our Coleman Bayside on it.  It had a serious porblem wiht mud because here in the mid-atlantic we have had 3 months of solid rain.  As we were leaving they were bringing in truckloads of gravel.
The Highmeadows campground fills up fast and has a very active train track next ot it (or so the lady on the phone says).  I have determined that if we want a quality campground when we go to Hershey we will have to be over 30 minutes away.
If I had the money I would do as Hershey girl says and build a campfround around Hershey.

AdminAnyone have experience with the Lebanon KOA?  I grew up in Lebanon and we were thinking of staying there for an extended visit to the area. (Staying for more than 1 night in Mom s senior apt is not an option anymore.)
