Has anyone camped in the Blue ridge mountains?  I am looking for a place in Virginia along skyway drive.  Any advice would help.  Thanks [:)]

mess5719I have camped rather extensively along the Virginia part of the Blue Ridge. There are NPS campgrounds dotted all along the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) and Skyline Drive, but all of them are rustic site s, no hook-up s and some of them don t even have any shower facilities (Peaks of Otter come to mind)

One really nice one is Sherando Lake Campground, it s not on the BRP but not far off either. It s about 2-3 miles off of BRP down in the Shenandoah Valley. If you utilize loop s B & C they are very level, mostly shaded, and have electric hook-up s, Giant size picnic tables, a cook-stove table, Lantern poles, and Fire ring. They also have new rest room facilities with flush toilets and hot showers. All that for $20 per nite (first come - first serve, no reservations accepted)... I stayed there last Saturday night on my way home from Ohio. Great swimming beach for the kids, and stocked trout in the lake. This campground is very close to I-64, the BRP & Skyline Dr.

If you want full hook-up s then the KOA in Staunton would be a good bet. I drove through Walnut Hills Campground on Saturday but didn t care for what I saw, so I drove off and went to Sherando Lake. The KOA in Staunton/Verona has water, electric, sewer, & cable tv, swimming pool, hot tubs, huge game room, it s own water fall, and a river you can inner tube on. Oh, they have a modem port too, but you ll need AOL or Earthlink, or something with an 800# to use it, and if someone tries to use the pay phone while your online, you ll get blown off quickly!!! This campground had the nicest rest room facilites I ve ever encountered at a campground, flush toilets & hot showers too...

If you re looking for something further south near Martinsville, I d recommend either Fairystone SP or Goose Creek Army Corp of Engineers campgrounds (they are side by side about 1/4 mile apart). Frankly speaking, Goose Creek is nicer as they have some really cool water front sites, and they just installed water & electric on those waterfront sites last year! Both have flush toilets and hot showers.

Pictres of all of these campground (except the KOA) are available on my website (www.gonecamping.net) under the campground review section...

Also, a picture of Sherando showing the tables & lanter poles can be seen by [link=http://www.gonecamping.net/images/dsc00217.jpg]Clicking HERE[/link]...

 Hope this helps!

mess5719Do you want Blue Ridge Parkway or Skyline Drive suggestions?  They run together in Waynesboro Virginia, but where Skyline Drive is only 105 or so miles, the Blue Ridge Parkway is over 400! There are some gorgeous places along the way.  Anywhere in particular?? Sherando Lake that was recommended by Cliff is gorgeous!
