I have a couple more days to research insurance for the Mesa before we pick it up. What do most here do? Add it to your regular car insurance company??? RV Insurance dealer???

vjm1639Congrats on the new MESA.  I called my car insurance agent and he issued a separate policy for about $100 per year.  I thought that was cheap, but if anyone else has a better idea, I d like to hear about it too.

vjm1639Insurance is different in every state and province and you should only take advice on coverage from a licensed professional in your local area. No two individual cases are alike and therefore should not be compared to each other.

If your state licenses independent brokers, I would suggest speaking to one of them as they are not employed by any insurance company and usually have the broadest range of experience. Do not avoid this issue, while your auto policy MAY cover the trailer while towing, any damage to the camper, theft from the camper or injuries to persons visiting the camper may not be covered. We have our auto and homeowners insurance with the same company, so adding coverage for the camper was easy and relatively inexpensive.

vjm1639In Colorado it is covered by the TV insurance policy when being towed and by the homeowners policy while in my garage or on my property. I guess I am lucky I don t have to have an additional policy to what I have. Check your state rules and see what is required, and with your existing insurance companies to see what they reccomend.

vjm1639Super info! Thanks everyone for all the terrific tips.  It s why I joined this group!  Everyone just seemed so friendly and helpful.  :>

vjm1639Got it added on to car insurance.  You can have it on it s own but if you have an accident while towing, you can bet the two companies involved will argue over who pays what.  Guess who ends up stuck in the middle?[:@]

vjm1639I m in Virginia also (but waaaaay down in the southwest corner). I had mine added to my car insurance. My car insurance is through Geico and the premium is $49 every six months for comprehensive and collision.

The dealer called the insurance company for me when I went to pick it up. Took about 5 minutes on the phone to get it all taken care of.

Sue, You may want to check on this, If you are going down the road and anything happens to your trailer, you aren t covered, if your in the campground, and a kitchen fire breaks out, your not covered. Your homeowners policy is very limited as to the coverage. At home it s covered, same as your Stereo, but on the road, it s only covered for liability when being towed. That s it.  So for $108/year I think it s worth the separate policy.

vjm1639Thanks everyone for the help. We ended up going with Progressive. I went to a site called RVAmerica Insurance and they do searches for the best prices on insurance for what you need then send you the quotes.  The best was a quote from Progressive. Then I called my State Farm agent who we ve used for everything for years with the house and all our cars over the years.   State Farm gave me almost the sameprice quote, just a tiny bit lower, but all they offer is comprehensive and collision.  The Prudential coverage also includesextra s like $750 Emergency Vacation Expenses, $1000 Personal Belongings Replacement Cost, Unlimited 24 hour roadside towing to nearest qualified repair facility, $10,000 Vacation/Premises homeowners type liability, $1000 Fire Department Service Charge, and..oddly enough...Mexico Physical Damage Coverage which covers your vehicle if damaged or destroyed while traveling in Mexico.  My State Farm agent looked at the Progressive quote and said, " WOW, i d go with them too!"   They didn t even offer the additional coverages.

Glad I did the internet search and found this place!
