birolI didn t look at all of your pictures but if the little leak on the valve cover is all you have than don t give it a second thought. It looks fine.

birolLooks like an engine to me [:D]

birollooks like a valve cover gasket leak to me, also Birol just a heads up the 3.8 in the windstar was notorious for head gasket problems so keep your eye w/ regards to having to add coolant or higher operating temps than normal.

Obviously it leaked once ! If I had the money I would get the engine washed and see if it is still leaking, the oil marks are not progressing or changing, so I am hoping they had it fixed and not bother cleaning it up.

As for the headgasget, tell me about it :( Our first windstar had a timing chain cover gasget failure, coolant leaked into the engine (I was topping it up and told the service drones frequently I shouldn t have to). After a MI trip to Sauder s factory (Hey I was working then we could take trips ok ! [8D])  I heard engine make some strange sounds, pinging knocking. Before I had a chance to take it to the delaer , while shopping enxt day one of the power steering hydraulic lines burst, so the car got towed in for that. Next day Delaer called me and said " Mr. Aytimur you need a new engine"  , and I knew, how cool it was :) Thanks GOD We had extended warranty and they paid the 5,000 canuck money for a re-man engine. well, extended warranty also paid for steering rods and stuff  (1K), and speedometer cluster (1K) and timing chain cover gasget repair (700) and some other stuff. That warranty at 900 dollars was worth so much . We sold the car shortly after because it was falling apart. We were paying 200 months to finance it , and every month the 50 $ deductible for this and that, and another 100 to 20-0 for stuff not covered by warranty.

Then we had the 2001 SEL Windstar, which had so many recalls, then we had to sell it and got this 1998 WIndstar WITH extended warranty for four years. Once this windstar is dead, we are never buying windstars again , never ......

I keep an eye on the coolant level and temperature gauge, they are solid .... 1 year now and not one drop of loss, temperature always the same, I hope it stays that way.

birolHi Birol, That s a loaded question, without listening to the engine and just looking at the pictures of your dirty engine it would be impossible to diagnose anything wrong unless you pinpoint something. Washing your engine should not cost much, use Formula 88 or Zep foumula 50 or Castrols purple stuff degreaser. Keep away from Gunk or petroleum based engine cleaners, they stink(odor wise) and they don t break up the grease and oil. You could do it at a self service car wash that recycles it s wash water. Spray everything with the degreaser let it sit a little and have at it, you ll be surprised at how sweet it will look, with fuel injection and electronic ignition you ll have no problem starting it afterwards if it runs rough you ll need new plug wires. The roughness will go away after they dry but none the less they ll need replacement.  Have Fun.

birolOh, I can wash the engine myself ? I did not know that I will see if there is a place where I can do that ! Thanks for the tip.

Engine sounds sweet, but under load and climbing, it sort of bucks slightly. Since I used a few bottles of fuel injector cleaner , it is barely noticable, but sometimes I feel it bucking. Otherwise runs cool and sounds sweet. I will wash the engine and see if it is still leaking, if it does I hope extended warranty covers it. I need it to tow my PU [;)]
