Saturday, July 12, 2003 at 12:15, we added a new member to our family.  Her name is Buttons and she weighs in at 2.7 lbs, has white fur with black fur around her eyes and black spots here and there.  We adopted a Border Collie mix, from the Humane Society.[:)]

Our Trixie (sheltie) disappeared last Wednesday[:(], do not know if she ran away, was taken from our fenced in yard, or what.  But we have not seen her anywhere.  The girls were so upset.  My 4 yr old ask what would happen to Trixie if she did not come back home, I told her someone else would love and take care of her.

Waited till Saturday and went to PetsMart, they allow Humane Society and others to bring in animals for adoption.  At first all we saw were large dogs, but against the wall they had a few small ones.  I fell in love at first sight, she is also calm.  Trixie was wild, also Trixie could not travel because she got very motion sick (had to medicate her to take her anywhere, not much fun).[: (]

Hope Buttons will be able to travel so she can go camping with us, it would be nice to have a camping dog.  From the postings that I have read from you all about camping with your pets, it sounds like fun.[:)][:)]

Ab Diver

NCSunshineWow, mixed emotions... Sincere Condolences for the loss of your beloved pet, and Hearty Congratulations on the adoption of a new and soon-to-be-loved family member.

Miller Tyme

NCSunshineSorry to hear about your loss, but glad to hear you picked up a new " camping buddy."

We recently added a border collie/springer spaniel mix to our little group. Lexi was a give-away in the local paper, yr old, completely trained, even likes riding in the truck.[8D]

Now if I can get her to stop drinking out of the toilet.[:@][;)]

NCSunshine

Miller TymeI hope Buttons doesn t take up the habit of drinking out of the toilet.  We, of course, are working on training her.  She is doing pretty good for no longer than we have had her.  We are trying the crate training, we put her there at night and the first place she goes in the morning is outside.

Of course, with her being a pup we are having to put up with the fuss she makes at night.[: (]

NCSunshineI d start now with short drives and slowly adding on time to get her used to traveling.

Good luck and congrats on the new puppy.  I d keep checking the lost and found and the pound in case someone brings Trixie in.  Another dog around really helps to calm a hyper one.

NCSunshineOooo...a new puppy!!! Terribly sad to lose one, but hopefully this little one will fill a part of that empty space in your hearts.  Our " other child"  was adopted from a Pet Rescue league from Pet Smart too!  He has been the most wonderful dog either of us have ever owned.   Yep, start him in the car early! Kobi started riding with us in the car the day after we got him and doing hikes in the mountains at 9 weeks.  Now he gets so excited if I touch his harness (we refer to it as his seatbelt).  [;)]

Enjoy that new little family addition!

Miss-Teri

NCSunshineI m so sorry about Trixie.
The rescue that I m with goes to Petsmarts, also.  It s a great service that they provide for rescued animals.
Not sure how familiar you are with Border Collies, although Trixie was also a herding breed so you are somewhat familiar.  They are an extremely intelligent breed, and must be kept motivated to stay happy.  She will probably be a wonderful travelling companion, but be sure you take her through obedience classes.  Border Collies are happiest when working or being told what to do, lol.  I saw a Border Collie owner on Pet Planet once who suggested buying sheep for your BC because they have such a herding need, hehe!  Agility and flyball are also wonderful sports for the breed and they are a lot of fun for the entire family.
 Congratulations on the new addition!!!

 NCSunshineNCSunshine,

Your new Border Collie sounds like mine: White coat with black facial markings and a few black spots here and there (actually, mine has a big black spot right on the top of its butt).  Interesting trivia: Border Collies with white coats are not AKC-recognized because it is said the herd will think it s another sheep.

While even dogs within breed have different temperaments, I can only echo what others have said about Border Collies. They re extremely intense and need lots of stimulation and exercise. My Border Collie, Oscar is now 8 years old and you d think he s still a puppy. This can be good and bad LOL. We thought he would have calmed down by now, but no such luck! Our dog is extremely gentle with Sactotoddler, but can be a little rambunctious in the house. That is, he doesn t always look where he s going, especially if he sees something outside. Not all Border Collies are good with kids, but since you re raising yours as a puppy, the dog will likely be well socialized around your children.

Congrats on the dogdoption, there are few breeds cuter than Border Collie puppies.

NCSunshineIf you want to train a dog to ride in the car, you could start with short trips and work you way up to longer ones.

But IMO, that would be boring!

When our dog was a puppy, we took him on a road trip to go look at a used TT.
(This was before our PU, we thought we wanted a TT??[&:])
When we finally arrived (1 1/2 hours later) He was crying a little, so DW picked him up to calm him down.
Well let s just say DW wasn t able to get out and look at the trailer, and we had to ride all the way home with the wdws open.[: (]

The trailer was a piece of junk, and we never looked at another TT, and the next
 week we ordered our PU.[:D]

Oh and now he does just fine in the car.[:)]

NCSunshine

NCSunshineThanks for all the great information about Border Collies.

angelsmom10-I have continued to check but with no luck.  I truly think she was picked up out of our fence.

vjm1639- the day we got her we had an hour drive home, then took her with us to a birthday party, then to visit other family members to show off.  With Trixie though she started right off the bat being sick and foaming at the mouth every time she was in the car.

Miss-Teri-Thank you for the info on Border Collies.  They gave me a coupon for training lessons at PetsMart when we got her and I do want to do that.  It will be another week or two before she can start because of age.  What is " Agility"  and " Flyball" ?

SactoCampers-you are not going to believe this but Buttons also has a big black spot on the top of her butt.  Sounds like they could be twins.  It is interesting about the white coat.  She is mixed but I don t know with what.  They also had her brother, he was solid black.

I think we are going to take a short camping trip to Dan Nicholas Park and take her with us to see how things go.  It is only 20 minutes from home so I think that would make a good start.  Thanks again.

NCSunshineSo sorry to hear of your lost dog but glad you found another.  My 17 1/2 yr old Taffi doesn t have a lot of time left and it is going to be very, very hard.  I already am reduced to tears at times.  She has given our family so much joy when my son and daughter were growing up.  Surprisingly, she is pretty healthy and has a good appetite, but she just doesn t see or hear as well as she used to.  The vet keeps asking what I feed her and seems amazed that she is doing so well.

What are you feeding her, is it a special dog food?  Inquiring minds want to know.
