We just picked up our new 2003 Suburban 4x4 last night.

I had to trade in the old conversion van and my 2001 Infiniti I30, but with 7 people in the family this made more sense.  I am going to be really sad to see the I30 go, it was a great car.  Highly recommend them to anyone.  When I bought the I30 we did not have Rachel s mother living with us nor two of Rachel s nieces.   So it was back to the van for family trips.

Our last vacation trip just convinced us that it was time to retire the van.  We did 7 states and it was the hottest week of the summer.  Went over the Smokies and back over the Alleghenies.  I had to run the heater to keep the engine temp down.  It was rough on all of us.  I think I also cooked the tranny too, it was making a lot of noise the last day of the trip and did not stop when we got back.

It is a shame that when you trade in cars that you never seem to get what you think they are worth.  With 144000 miles on the van, all they wanted to do was wholesale it.  Even the car did not get much back either.  But we did get the Suburban for 0%, so I will be happy to use GM s money for a few years.

We had just bought a Reese Mini 350 for the trip, and it was great.  The only problem was that the receiver on the van was so old that I had to use a sledge to get the new hitch in far enough.  To be able to trade it off, I had to have my favorite shop air chisel off the old hitch to be able to get the new Reese out.  Ouch!  Not sure what that will cost yet.  Boy,  they were really making a lot of noise!  I took the van home and took out the Drawtite brake controller, and will now see if I can use it in the Suburban.  The 7-pin wiring looks different too, anyone have info about this?  My local Coleman dealer said that I can use the same controller, and that they would charge a " couple of hundred"  to install it for me.  That did not sound like a deal, so I will get the instructions out and see if it is something that I can do.

Anyway, my insurance went down by $40/mo, but my 16 yr old son gets his license tomorrow, so it will go back up by $106/mo.   Can t win for losing.  At least I get something new to drive for a while.  I am happy about that.  [:D]

Dayton DaveCongratulations ! Suburbans are dream TV s ! We hope to get one , one faaaar away day ....

Dayton Dave" couple of hundred"  to install it? That definitely does NOT sound like a deal! When I traded vehicles back in April, the car dealer took the brake controller off the Jeep for me. I took it and the new Durango to the Coleman dealer to have it installed. They only charged me $50!

The Durango was prewired for the brake controller, so all the guy had to do was mount it in place, and then wire it into the pre-existing harness under the dash.  Don t know if it would have been more if they had to run all the wires from the hitch to the controller. Still, " couple of hundred"  sounds pretty steep!

Dayton DaveYou had a van with 144,000 miles on it.
 You had an overheating problem.
You said you fried the transmission.
You said you it s a shame you didn t get what it s worth?

If you got more than $50 I d say you got what it s worth.

Dayton DaveI agree with labontefan; " a couple of hundred"  is way too much to install the brake controller. At best, the dealer will have to switch 2 wires around (GM, in their infinite wisdom, decided to swap the placement of 2 wires in the 2003 connectors). I would have to think that a competent, knowledgeable dealer should be able to do the complete install -- including the wiring changes -- within 1/2 an hour.

Dayton DaveCongrats - when you picking us up[:D]

Dayton DaveCouple of hundred bucks is way too much.  I have a 2001 Tahoe without the towing package.  It was pre-wired, all I had to do was buy a $16(?) plug and plug it in under the dash.  Took 2 minutes.  Check into it before you make a decision.

Dayton DaveCongrats on the new tow vehicle.  It sounds like you made the very best choice and got out from under the used, high mileage van that was starting to give you trouble.  At 0% I think you have a winning combination if you got a good deal off the sticker price.[:)]

Well, the $16 ended up being $36 for the new harness, but at least I have something to work with, thanks.

 Trlrboy;

Before you jump down my throat again, what I was referring to was not necessarily the issues you referred to.  When you buy a new full size raised roof conversion van be prepared to pay extra for the conversion, and that you will never get what you feel is the value of the vehicle back in trade.  They do not hold their value in resale.  If you want one, great, enjoy it.  Nothing better.    I also was referring to the Infiniti, I know that that car will be on the lot for 5K to 7K more than I got for it.  And it is worth it in my opinion.  Still does not reduce the emotion of wanting to get the best deal when you go to a dealership to work a trade.  Besides the noise that I was hearing in my van could well be that it needed a fluid and filter change, bands adjusted, or even not the transmission at all, but a bad U joint.

If you were slower to slam someone just to get a laugh, you might have asked or refered to any price guides that reflect that a van with that mileage, chassis alone is worth 4-5K, then add on the value of the conversion.  But that was not what you were going for, was it?

So I still think that I would have wanted to get more for my trades, nothing wrong with that.  Thanks for diminishing the situation of my getting a new TV.  Real Nice of you.

Dayton DaveAw.......I am so happy and envious that you got a new TV.....a burb, as we call it around here.  Some old guy even has a custom plate with Burb on it.  LOL!  It s is real hard to get a decent trade on custom vans, even if you try to sell it yourself.  Naw, don t worry, you have done the right thing and go ahead and enjoy that no interest deal you got.  Wish it was me.  I am looking around for a TV and a camper and plan to take my time. My car is getting high miles and I know I won t get much for it and I may even keep it to scoot around town cause it still looks good, drives good and is the best car I have ever had.  I just hate to give it up.[:)]
