Ronthanks no wonder I like to camp in private campgrounds!

CampinCrazy

RonI must have an overly active imagination.  First time I read that they had films of hundreds of aliens sneaking through the campgrounds; I was thinking Roswell NM type of aliens (UFOs)!  I just haven t adjusted to the lingo of living near the border!

That was my original impression, too!

The story is a little too sensationalistic for me.  I would guess that folks camping in marked campgrounds and staying on the trails would probably be fairly safe in most of these parks.  The illegal activity is not going to be taking place in plain view, most likely, and those who are engaging in it are likely more worried about getting caught than they are liable to harrass peaceful campers.

If those are the most dangerous national parks, it sounds like the parks are pretty safe.

 Except in Texas and Arizona.

RonI think this web site is for park staff and is showing the parks that are most dangerous to work at.

The group that published the list is the collective bargaining representatives for Rangers. So, their publication is definitely biased, but, I guess so is just about everything one reads! But the core point is probably valid, budget cuts = staffing cuts, and that seems to be the bone of contention.

Here s the URL to the National Park Service s Morning Report.

I read it somewhat regularly, and it seems that those parks mentioned in Texas and Arizona do have more then their share of incidents, including the tragic loss of a Ranger.

RonGee, and I thought the Flamingo CG in Everglades National Park (Fla) would be listed cos a friend of a friend saw a crocodile (much more vicious than alligators) " walking" in the tent area that faces the water.  (No longer likely to take a dog in a tent to those sites!!!).

BTW, crocs are protected and are making a comeback to the extent that at least one has been seen sunning itself on someone s dock in a Key Largo canal, where people are used to (or used to be used to!) jumping in to cool off.

RonI haven t actually checked the stats, but I d bet you re far safer in the most dangerous National Park campground than in your own home.

RonThey had this featured on 20/20 (?) last week.  The Rangers are having a hard time due to budget cuts, layoffs, etc.  However after watching the show I wouldn t be fearful of camping there, just careful - like you are anyplace else.
