What do you know?  I m not quite the computer dunce I thought I was[8D][8D][8D]!  Got to messing around cleaning up a few old files and before I realized it, I d deleted a file that made my " Quick Time Player"  work and I have to have it for my camera[:@][:@][:o][:o]!!!  Of course, this is one of those files that rather then going to the electronic trash can, it goes straight to electron heaven![:o]  What to do???  Think, think, THINK!!!

 Got it!

Go to home page and do search for " Quick Time" !  Find and register for free download!!  Go through all the voo-doo to get download running!!!  90 per cent done, it quits!  RATS![:@]  Do it again!  Seems a bit " jerky"  but it does download!!  Success!!!  Re-start and try it.  It won t WORK!  Double rats[:@][:@]!  Fiqure I ve really messed it up and it s going to take a $1000.00 per hour " Computer Guru/Geek"  to fix it.  Figure I ve nothing to loose and try to download one more time.  It clicks!  It pops!!  It gurgles!!!  IT WORKS!!![:D][:D][:D]

JOY!  JOY!  JOY!  I had a computer problem and I fixed it myself (with the help of a couple of gujillion electrons!!!)  You have no idea how happy I am!!!  I am NOT a total computer dunce, thankyou very much[;)][;)][;)]!

Turn KeyIt was the gurgling. You always want to gurgle your files or else they ll never work.

 Turn KeySC,
Thought that s what it was[:D][:D][:D]!

Turn KeyI know what you mean!   Computers scare the crap out of me, I always think they are gonna explode or something if I do the wrong thing.  Having said all that, I am going to be getting DSL service soon, and guess who has decided that she can install it herself without a company guru geek type person to do it for $200.00?!   Well, I m gonna try anyway.

Turn KeyI have been programming computers since 1977, and PC s since about 1985.  All I can say is, there are still things that are black magic to me.

Every once in a while, I ll do a little vodo dance, call in some other programmers, and we ll all stare in amazement as it starts working...because we are all watching it.

 Other things I have seen:

 * Developer effect.  When a user has a problem, and it s so baffling you can t figure out what is going on, just ask the user to show it to you.  Suddenly, the problem disappears.  By the time you get back to your cubicle, you have a voice mail saying it s doing it again.

 * Boss effect.  When you finally got that wizz-bang working, and you call the boss over to see, it will blow up in a most spectacular way.

 * Stupid user effect.  If you say " click"  they will " double-click" .  If you say " right-click"  they will " double-click" .  If you say " Press Spacebar"  they will " double-click" .  If you say " please wait"  they will " double-click" .  If you say " double-click"  they will say " what s a double-click?"

 * Let it run overnight effect.  If you have something that takes a long time to run, and you have to leave overnight, you will discover in the morning that it stopped ten minutes after you left, waiting for you to click the last " OK"  button.

 * Alternate let it run overnight effect.  Leaving something to run overnight guarantees that the janitor will trip the breaker on your PC...at the worst possible moment in the process.

 * NOT OK effect.  The message box telling you you just lost four hours of work will have one button.  It will say " OK" .  It will not be OK.

I just got DSL through Verizon about a month ago and installed it myself...piece of cake! Don t know how your system works, but Verizon sent me an external modem that connects either thru USB or Ethernet (w/both kinds of cables), filters for my other phones, and a CD that explained everything.

I put the CD in and the software analyzed my system, told me I had Ethernet (which I knew), and that I should use that connection. It told me what the Ethernet connection would look like and what the Ethernet cable looked like. The CD walked me through the installation step by step. The hardest part was getting down on my hands and knees and crawling under my computer desk to reach the power strip and the back of the CPU!  (My knees were not happy!)

I had the whole thing ready to rock and roll in just a few minutes!

 You can do it!

AB, Not to brag but this is a problem I don t believe I ve ever given a tech trying to help me.  I always repeat back each step before I do it to make sure I don t hit the wrong key!  The very idea of that scares the willies out of me!!!  Being as I have no clue what I m doing, I want to make SURE I understand.  Saves a group of hassle even though it might slow things down a bit.

Turn KeyThanks for giving me confidence.  My dsl will be through sbcyahoo, but it sounds like the same type of thing.   I got the kit in the mail yesterday, but the set up date is for the 11th, so will wait for that.  One question, what about all your favorites, photos and files, etc.?   Did you have to back them up or anything?  Or did they jus transfer over to the new modem and system?

Turn KeyThis is an interesting topic as I am going to be going to the high speed in the next week or two.  It s encouraging to know that I will be able to do the install.[:)]

Turn KeyYour favorite links are stored in your PC s memory so none of the links should be affected...you ll just be able to get to them a lot faster!!

The only real problem I ve encountered doesn t really have to do with the DSL line. Since your computer is more vulnerable to hackers with DSL (you can stay logged on all the time if you want), I upgraded from Norton AntiVirus to Norton Internet Security. It includes the AntiVirus software plus a personal firewall. (Once you have DSL, you get spam instant messages as well as spam e-mail. [:@]) For some reason, the firewall won t let me post to the PUT message board! [:o]Apparently, there s something in the software that triggers the firewall. So when I want to post a response (like now), I have to temporarily disable the firewall. (It only takes a couple of clicks.) I think there s another way around it by making the PUT board a " trusted site"  or something like that. I just haven t taken the time to figure it out yet. I can post to other boards that use different software with no problem.

Other than that I love my DSL!!!

Turn KeyThanks for letting me know, I was a bit worried about that.  (just goes to show how computer stoopid I really am)  But other than that, it does look fairly straightforward, the stuff that came with the kit gives a lot of info, and the software is suppose to walk me right thru it.   Actually, i have to give a lot of credit to all of you people here on this message board.   If it weren t for many of you telling how you do things, and giving the rest of us the confidence to give changes and upgrades a try, this would be just a very expensive solitaire game for me.   I think that I may even someday try to have a regular camping webpage, instead of just a  bunch of pics  and it will be because the rest of you do it and talk about how you did it that will help me.   Ann, and Turnkey, thank you for posting to this thread, Nancy, if I can do it, anybody can, and all the rest of you with beautiful sites for us to look at, thank you.

Turn KeyTo make PUT a trusted site click the tools tab on your IE page then select internet options. After that click the security tab. You should be able to enter the info needed to make PUT a trusted site there.
 Good Luck!
