Montana - Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway?

Has anyone camped along the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway in SW Montana in late May?   I m assuming that with the lack of snow this winter (bummer), it will be accessible then.   I d like to know if anyone has recommendations for any of the campgrounds near Elkhorn Hot Springs.  Are some more mosquitoed than others?  We re planning a trip to the area, will spend a few days looking for crystals at the Crystal Park NF site,  kick around the old mine and ghost town at Coolidge, and soak in the hot springs.
