Well, this has been talked about before and dave sells the Socket Genie in the store.

Well, the batteries for mey cordless drill finally died and I needed new ones.  WOW, $65 for each battery!  Thinking about it, that is half the cost of a new " heavy duty"  drill.  Hmmmm, if I have a heavy duty drill - I can use it on the roof like everyone talks about.

Well, $265 for the drill and another $30 for the socket genie.  What a neat system.  I used it onl our last trip and it worked great.

tim5055Cool. Think you could design a drill to raise my scissor lift?[8D]

BTW, Tim, the second picture doesn t work. O/W everything looks great.

 That s strange.......

Well, I posted the update to the site just before getting on a plane.  It will have to wait for next weekend to fix[&:]

Cadeuses

tim5055Welcome to the ranks of the power crazy " lazies"  like me, and a host of others.  I hesitated for a long time before I opted to get  a drill capable of raising the roof, but finally succumbed to the desire a few months ago.  I ended up buying the dw006 kit.

You are absolutely correct in telling others wanting to raise their roof with a drill to use the side handle.  The first time I DIDN T use it... I just about twisted my arm off at the wrist.  My thumb still hurts a bit every now and then.

Congrats Tim on your new purchase.  Which model did you get?  987?  Have a great day, and enjoy the new drill!

tim5055I too bought a Heavy Duty drill and a Socket Jenie last year. Since DW and I never dry camp I opted for a corded 1/2"  model. Buying a corded model, instead of cordless, I got a lot more drill for a whole lot less that the cordless models cost. My corded model cost around $125.00 on sale at Home Depot.

Just a thought and another option to consider. We always camp where there is electricity so I figured why spend the extra money for a cordless model.

Also ditto, on the post about using the side handle. The torque of the drill WILL hurt you if you are not careful and keep it under control.

tim5055Tim, it never ceases to amaze me how your instuctions are right on target and easy to understand. I to got a cordless drill a few months ago. I don t miss working up a sweat on a hot summers day and my back is thankfull for the drill as well. I will second the warning to go easy lifting the roof with the drill. Someone not used to powertools can get in lots of trouble real fast. Looks like you have the one I got. It s great on the camper (stabilizers to) and a superior drill for more traditional jobs. [:)]

Gone-Camping

tim5055Oddly enough I just bought another drill this evening after letting the DeWalt 24v unit go with the P/U. Since I m not trying to raise a roof anymore, I figured the new drill didn t have to be the monster the last one was! But after spending the morning charging and recharging my trusty 15 year old Craftsman 9v drill (batteries just won t hold a charge anymore) I decided to get something inbetween.

I got an 18v Quantum Pro by B&D, all metal 1/2"  chuck and has reduction gearing, and side grip handle, all for $99. Now this unit probably won t raise any roof s, but it ll sure make quick work of my four stabilizers! Oh, and it s gotta be worlds ahead of the old Craftsman!!!

Bottom line here, if you re going to raise the roof, do it with a DeWalt...

tim5055I think DeWalt could at least give us all a shirt.......

tim5055Gotta plug the Dewalt.  I first bought a Craftsman 24V cordless and about smoked it before I shut it down.  I returned it and bought the Demalt 24V and has wordked like a charm ever since.  There was a big difference in cranking the pop-up after I put the A/C on the roof.  After doing it by hand a few times I was starting to yearn for a hybrid.  As others have said, be careful when you raise and take it slow, and that drill will torque your wrist pretty good once it gets started if your not paying attention.  I only use mine to raise the roof, never to lower it, I like to watch the camper go down slowly (my six year old cranks as my wife and I walk around tucking in the tenting and watching).

You know, I do the same thing but never thought to put it on the web page.  Well, here is another update when I get home.
