After reading about Geocaching in the most recent issue of PUT, I decided to give it a try.  It starts by logging onto [link=]www.geocaching.com[/link].  At this site you can enter info about you current location or a site you will be camping at.  From that they will give you a list of " caches"  with gps coordinates.  You simply plug those coordinated into your gps unit and go hunting!

I tried a site near my home.  It was very excitting to actually find the cache.  It was full of little things that people had left as a trade & a log book to fill out.  I can t wait to begin another search & this time let my little boy lead the way.

It doesn t even take a big investment in equiptment.  I have an entry level gps (Garmin eTrex) that I bought on sale at Dick s sporting goods. It was about $90.00.  They may be cheaper now & ebay may have some good buys.  I bet this would make a good birthday or Christmas present for someone.

Anyway, I plan on finding more caches & hope to even hide some of my own.

Thanks for the great info in PUT!!! My favorite magazine!

JonesFamilyJaycoSounds like a fun thing to do....[:D]

CampinCrazy

JonesFamilyJaycoWe started doing it this spring (before Texas hit 110 degrees) as a family.  We all love it.  The kids call it a treasure hunt!  Now that there is cool weather in sight, we ll start back up!

JonesFamilyJaycoI first heard of geocaching a few weeks ago. One of my co-workers stumbled across the site by accident while looking for something else. He became quite interested and found several sites near our area. He was showing me some of the information he had printed off. He s got his little boy interested also. Like CampinCrazy s kids, his little boy calls it a treasure hunt! I ll have to show him the article in PUT. (He was recently asking me about pop-ups since he and his wife like to camp. Also, his dad was in the market for a pop-up. I may drum up some business for PUT!! [:D][;)])

JonesFamilyJaycoJust make sure you leave as many " treasures"  as you take!  Our boys went with thier Dad a few weeks ago and had a ton of fun!  You should ve seen them scrambeling around the house for a treasure to exchange with the one s at the sites!  [;)]

JonesFamilyJaycoMy family loves to geocache too.  What surprises me is how many caches you can find near campgrounds, and how many caches there are all across the world.
