NightOwl

well, a friend from PUX e-mailed me today and said how happy he was to see me signed in over there and that a bunch of old friends had welcomed me warmly.  I was a bit surprised to find myself at a board I had never visited.  Actually, I had always INTENDED to visit  that site--everyone always had a lot of nice things to say about it, but Golly Moses, I hardly have time to even come here or do my e-mail most of the time anymore, so kept putting it off until "tomorrow" and couldnt find the post dave or someone here had made with all those other addresses for camping sites so never got around to it.

So decide I'd better go and check.  My friend told me how to find the place and sure enough, there I was in all my NightOwl glory chumming around with a bunch of our old-timers.  And it IS funny, no harm done, nothing bad was said by the "new NightOwl" about anyone or anything  So I registered as RealNightOwl and posted what had happened and how nice it was to see so many old friends.

And then I thought, well it is Thanksgiving, and this is something else to be Thankful for, a kind of happy accident enlarging my cyber-world and getting me in touch once more with some dear camper friends.

You know, NightOwl, when PUX was first developed (or whatever the word is for it)  Someone did the same thing to me, both at PUX and IRV2.  (No, not NightOwl, wiinikwe)   I ended up contacting both boards, and getting a new password set so that I was the only one who could use my own screen name.  Never did find out who did it to/for me, but it doesn't really matter.   Have only posted a few times on each board, but have read the threads now and then, both seem to be really nice places, good feeling there, and lots of info.

Eilisa, I'm not a mod there, but I am at the sister site HYX (Hybridexplorer.com) and have access to the PUX moderator forum which is not viewable to regular visitors. In that section, I made a note to the moderators and the admin (Dean) about the "Identity theft" and suggested they change the password on the "Nightowl" name, and then email you the new password so you can utilize your own name, as well as that would prevent any further posting by the imposter. I think most of Mods may have taken the evening off, but I suspect you'll hear from someone soon enough.

I would like to say, that from the looks of the respondents to the imposters original (and only) post, that you're missed by a lot of old freinds over there!

B-flat

Wow, some imposters on other camping message boards.  I wonder if there is another B-flat.  Naw, there's only one and that's me.  I have never visited other boards except maybe once, so there had better not be an incident of identity theft going on over there.  Well, if so, I am kind of flattered.:D

Elisa-

Hope everything got straightened out. I'm a moderator at PUX, but DNO the admin. is the only one who can track down the imposter NightOwl.

As I said in my post at PUX, don't be shy about stopping in and chatting with old friends-I'm sure a lot of them miss you.:W

Don't worry, your identity is safe, I guess no one wants to be you. J/K

A lot of the free boards have problems with imposters, this is just one that got caught.

We've also had a few trying some tricks on PUT, but I just baked some of my famous cookies as the old timers here may remember.;) :D

I am not the real Birol actually :)  I am an impostor :) I also got taken by that post of Nightowl at PUX, I said to myself, woow, all of a sudden she decided to post there too, man oh man. Some people need to get a life !

Ha ha Birol, there are times when I think we have ALL been taken over by Alien Pods, so in fact, you may not be the real Birol at all.. How would we know for sure?  BIG SMILEY HERE!  (yeah, I'm still using Billy's computer with java and cookies all screwed up)

Actually, the person who phonily (is there such a word?) registered me at PUX did me a favor as I have gone over there and spent a lot of time reading many  enjoyable posts in their forums-- a lot of old friends are among the members there (some of them are here with us at PUT, too.)  It is kind of the best of both worlds and I guess I might not have gotten around to exploring  it except for the identity theft.

Not to worry, all's well that ends well.  (Big  Yellow Sun icon here)

NightOwl:  So, was the imposter doing a good job of doing the posts for you?;) :D   This would be kind of like having your own personal twin to do all the work for you.

Actually, Nancy, yes, the "fake me" made a very pleasant post, at least THAT time, and the only problem was that I did not want people to misunderstand the remarks and conclude erroneously that I was leaving PUT.

Dean, the nice adminstrator over at PUX, fixed the situation very quickly (like our  WebMaster  did when someone did that to me several  years ago when PUT made its first "big move") and I am now able to log in under my own NightOwl name over there as well as here. (Big Smile)

Was this person caught red-handed?  Did they know this person's location from his puter code?  There is a way to know.....

Gone-Camping

Well, the "behind the scenes" activity on that is still ongoing. They do have the posters IP address, and an email address with a "very familar" name on it, but so far we're unable to discern if the email addy was real or not. We're not going to spread rumor around over here on that, but should suffice to say that it is being "investigated" by DNO. IP addy's are not necesarilly totally unique either, so it can be very hard to track it down.

I'm not at liberty to divulge any of the particulars on this, nor do I think that would be appropriate in this forum.

The "authorities" are able to capture who breaks into college and university databases.  I just figured there was a way to find out who is trying to be an imposter.  Virus creators are sometimes captured, too.

It's long and complicated, but as Barney Fife would say, "Nip it in the bud!"

I agree with Cliff that  ithere is nothing to be gained by knowing who did it or discussing it further so that it becomes "intra-mural" gossip. All I wanted was for this to not continue.  The main thing is, it was taken care of VERY quickly by Dean and others at PUX, and very well handled.   (And I got to see a bunch of my old friends again, so this was a "fortunate accident" as far as I am concerned.)
