The trees are still bare here , but the buds for the new leaves are already on them and soon will be swelling.  That means camping season cant be too far away!

And THAT means that probably  a whole  bunch of us are beginning to wake up to the fact that we   need to  GET  FIT!   (And dont have a lot of time to do it in.)

Hikes...Yikes!

Toni and I have been talking to each other a lot  lately about the "bad results" of  settling in for  a long winter of laziness and eating toooo much of the wrong stuff   Of course, the holidays didnt help, and cold weather always makes people want to veg out by the fire, the tv,  or the computer, and eat lots of comfort food (read: mashed potatoes, waffles, cakes and pies.)

I am starting this thread to see if there is an interest from any board members in having me set up a "Good Livin'" thread over at the food forum kind of  like the one  we had on the old board where we discussed  everything from food to diet plans, to kinds of exercise, fitness machines and gym memberships.

At the time, a whole bunch of  members, including guys, really  got into the subject enthusiastically.  We had hundreds of posts to that thread and it produced reams  of  useful information. People really opened up  as we described our  lack of fitness  and the  health concerns we faced  because of that.  And lots of us benefitted from sharing our ideas and our progress.  Time to do it again?

What do you think, Gang?    :W

It sounds like a really great idea.  I could use some "Good Livin' " before my date is set.  Yes, living the good life over the holidays has done me in again.  After the day of Chocolate, I promise to get back on my diet and do some serious exercise, else the banjo man might gain a fat wife. :o

Well Elisa, thank you for reminding us about an important issue.  I went for breakfast this morning with some friends, and most of our conversation was centered on our health, weight and eating habits. (and medications that we may not need if we manage our health and weight with better eating habits and exercise)  You all know that we tried hard to keep a health concious thread going on the other board, and even tried to bring it here to this board with us.  We let it slide, but that doesn't mean that there isn't still a need for many of us to have positive reinforcement with our efforts to improve our general health.  I'll be the first to admit that I've forgotten completely how to eat in a healthy way, and have been spending lots of time watching my exercise tapes, with little time participating.   Being able to talk with others about my trials and temptations is a great help to me, and I would appreciate anyone who decides to respond to this appeal for a new forum, or if nothing else, at least a thread on this forum.

great timing on this Elisa!!  This past week I joined a woman's only gym called Curves!  It's pretty great...low key atmosphere, 30 minute exercise program combining weight training with resistance machines and then between machines you can walk in place, jog, stretch, etc and then an announcement comes on to tell you on to the next rotation.  It's like musical chairs for grownups but it works!!  Plus membership won't break you financially.  There are women there of every size and shape and age.  It's a fun place to be.  My physical therapist recommended I start it as a way to restrengthen my neck and back from the car accident last summer.  So it has to gentle exercise yet effective.  Plus you can show up in sweats or jeans and a tshirt, there's no "look at me" attitude there!

As I'm sitting here I was eyeing the last Valentine's cupcake from my son's school party....yummm chocolate with pink frosting!  However, I went over and grabbed an apple instead and am munching on that as I write!!  So proud of me I tell ya!!

Yesterday I spent some time talking with Elisa, and she very gently reminded me of the great success that I had last year when I started a low-carb way of eating.   I did do wonderful, lost 35 pounds in 6 weeks and felt great.  Then we went on vacation and I "forgot" to watch the carbs, and never got around to going back to that way of eating.  Not that I didn't think about it, just got too lazy to put the effort into not grabbing junk foods and high carb stuff.   Elisa and I had both read the book "Protein Power" by Michael and Maryanne Eades, and I really like the concept behind it.  It's essentially the same as an Atkins approach, with a little different perspective.  The Eades also have a web site, based on the diet and book.   www.eatprotein.com   It has a message board, with a lot of good forums, and lots of information about foods, diets, exercise, recipes, etc.   Just thought I'd let you know.   I'm going to start checking this site out for some help with getting back to good health.

I have transferred all the previous posts from this thread to a more "permanent" version here at the Campfire called "Good Livin' for '04 and Always."   There seems to be a small core of us interested in this subject and whether the interest in it grows to include others  or not, I think we can benefit from what we each have to say.

Let's let this thread pass down to the bottom of the page and "into the night of oblivion"  and send our health and fitness  ideas to this newer thread.
