I picked up the new Outback 28RS-S today.  Love it!  The walk through went fine, no issues with the camper at all, had a good PDI person and they took enough time for my questions and inspections. Once I was hooked up I took it to get it weighed and drove around at freeway speeds with trucks around, and it towed wonderfully.  Bit nervous running around town with the extra 5' compared to our previous 23' camper.  Its now setup in the side yard and myself and the boys are going to campout there tonight.

At the scales, the truck was empty but had me, Equa-li-zer WD hitch, dual 6v batteries, 2 full 30 gal. propane tanks. It came in with a GCWR of 11,860, the max for the Av is 14,000.  Using a previous truck weight of 5,674 and that means the camper weighs in at 6,186 giving me 1,714 CCC, which I can't see us needing all of.  The brochure weight is 5,190, and the Trailer Life weight was 6,140.  Once we load up I anticipate being right close to the 7,000 limit.  I want to get the Av weight again to see how it compares.

I updated the pictures on our website with new interior photos, and I should have exterior photos this weekend. http://mysite.verizon.net/s_howland/outback/

Steve -
That is awesome!
Very nice.   :)

I like the cabinet facing on the fridge & freezer.  Just like a Sub-Zero.

Have fun tonight!  Quite a change from the Niagara huh?

Thanks for the pictures and glad to hear your towing numbers are alright.

Enjoy!   :)

Thanks Jeff, yeah a lot different than the Niagara, but I do miss those big beds!  First night was fun.  Kids had a blast playing their gameboys on the top bunks all snuggled in their sleeping bags.  The ducted heat kept the camper very warm, which was good because is ***snowed*** on us last night. Not much but there is a trace amount of snow all over the ground, sure glad I didn't take it someplace like I wanted too!  Loved the remote control for the furnace and a/c unit, was nice to warm things up a bit more without getting out of bed.  Of course just like camping the youngest was up at 7:00 AM - so much for sleeping in today.

Wow, that hybrid is awesome.  I saw one at the NC RV show yesterday.  It was too big for banjo man and me, but it is perfect for families.  Enjoy that new rolling hilton to the fullest.

Steve,

Congrats on the new trailer! I'm sure you'll be happier with it than with the boat you contemplated getting.  ;)

Y-Guy

I hope so topcat, its tough having my job right next door to one of our areas largest boat dealers and seeing them come and go all day long.  Maybe one day, but for now we want to keep on camping!

Sweeeet!

QuoteLove it!
Totally! Who wouldn't? Major congrats, Steve. That puppy rates very highly on our list of possible contenders for a new Mobile Morris Manor.

Gotta go now. My pop-up's turning green with envy.

VERY nice camper!  I LOVE the "wood" flooring!  That camper is nicer than my house!  ;)

I wish you MANY wonderful camping trips!  :W

Wow, it looks very nice!! Love the floors... I want them in my reg house!!

Congrats on the trailer Steve. That's the one with the quad bunks up front and slide out queen in the back, right? I always liked that one. But you're a little close on the weights.....and besides, Kevin has a manlier truck than you. So you'll have to see his 3/4 ton and raise him a 1-ton. Or you could do the smart thing and just get a minivan....or the cliched Geo Metro (but then you'd have to get a 5th wheel).

We looked at this camper also and are very interested in it.  But with the weight of 6,186 it will be very close to our 7000 GVWR.  Why would the brochure weight be so far off?  I bought 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 Conversion Van in the hopes of upgrading to a hybrid in the next year or two, what are your thoughts on this weight problem?

NIIICE!

We saw one just like this at the RV show and liked it!

Congratulations!

I'll be having the Av weighed dry this week so I'll know 100% what the dry camper weight is.  All the campers that I've seen have disparity in the weights, they weigh them without options.  Once I get it and get a true number I'll post.

We love the plan of the 25RSS!.  It's big enough but not too big.  We only saw it once at a show last year.  Is it 25 feet opened or what?  We couldn't tell from the zeroxed plan we were given.  We also wondered what the sofa size is -ie. will it sleep two chummy adults?  If it rains and you close it will water get on the inside or do you dry it off?

We are trying to decide if the expandable tent kind  would be better or the hard slide kind.  Since you had an expandable before we would love to hear your imput.  I think the weights you found out might be a determining factor for us!

Many thanks,

campercarly

carlycamper, The 25' should be the travel length, add another 4' when its fully expanded.  The sofa could fit two adults, like you said if they were very chummy, but I've yet to see any of the sofas that were not that way.  The slide outs have seals that help to stop the water, I've tested a few times at home and had no problems.  Keeping the seals well lubricated will be the key here.  Many owners with any type of slide out suggest sweeping off the roof before pushing it back in so you don't have pine needles and other stuff damage the seals.

Besides the Outback, you may want to check out the KZ Frontier, Starcraft Aruba/Homestead and Gulfstream Streamlites, which are all using the same general floor plan.  Supposedly the Streamlites will have power bed slides.
