This web site is very helpful for me ... You may find it helpful to you...

Thanks for posting this here. I've seen the lady that started all this on tv, and she's really something. Some of her idea are just great. I especially like the idea that you can do anything for 15 minutes. For those of us that are trying to lose weight, getting started with any kind of exercise program is a hard thing, but to give it a short time limit makes it more 'do-able'. Many of us have the idea that we have to pump iron or something til we drop, and that's all wrong. Any kind of activity in small increments is a good thing, and the more you do, the more you will be able to do. The same theory holds with pounds lost, too. They say that if you lose 5% of your body weight it will make an appreciable difference in your overall health. 5% is a very small amount, very possible to do in a relatively short time, especially with exercise. And then you can do 5% all over again, don't worry about the large numbers.

Thanks, Toni!  I guess it doesn't translate well, cuz that wouldn't make for a very dramatic film... I get this mental picture of me running through a  "Godfather" film with a big fish wrapped in a newspaper. ;)  Looks like Mr. Kostner chose wisely.

On the flip side, I made it to 20.1 miles yesterday. Took me almost four hours (hey, I never said I was fast) and the last 4 miles were sheer h*ll. Glad I have a couple more months to ramp up the miles, cuz I don't think I could have made it all the way to 26.2 miles (the finish line) if my life depended on it.

As for the exercise thing, we ALL have to start with baby steps. My running started with a run/walk program, where you walk for 45 minutes the first week. Then run for 30 seconds and walk for 4-1/2 minutes the next week. Do that for 45 minutes every other day for a week. Then run 1 minute and walk 4 minutes the next week after that. Keep adding to the run time and subtracting from the walk time. Pretty soon you are running for 5 minutes and walking for 1 minute. You'd be surprised how easy it is to build up enough stamina to run a mile in a single non-stop run. I'm talking a nice, slow run where you can carry on a conversation without gasping for breath. From there, it's just more baby steps to higher numbers.

So doing "anything" for 15 minutes is exactly right. It all adds up.

Just wanted to bump this up to the top and hear how everyone is doing on their Low-Carb (and other) Diets and AbDiver on his training.  No one has posted here since May!

AbDiver/Dave, I bet the Western Rally kind of messed up your training?

I am soo happy the way I am going !!!!! From 95 Kg's I am down to 88 ! My original weight when I started to take the darned Hyper tension pills ! (209 Lbs down to 193 Lbs). I intend to keep doing exactly what I am doing .... eat less, moderate on pasta and pizza and keep moving ! I want to go down to at least 185 Lbs by the end of summer .... and keep loosing till I hit around 170 or whereabouts ....

angelsmom10

Congrats on the weight loss... wish I could see 193, but I'm starting down.

I joined a research study where there is a trial med (for depressions) that they want to see how it works, there are 2 different meds and a placebo, so I have only a 33% chance of having the placebo.  I've been on it for 2 weeks and I have lost 5lbs.  I have lost some of my appetite and this could be a result of the med.  If my blood pressure stays down, I can stay on the meds.

Good to see this thread come back up again.  And especially good to see the great results you're having.  I'm not doing as well, haven't lost any weight at all for over a month now, but haven't gained any either.  I guess that's something.  I have a long way to go still, sometimes feel kinda discouraged but am not giving up.  Somewhere along the line, this 'stall' has to break.
Angelsmom, I've heard alot about how meds have a big effect on weight gain and loss, maybe this will be the key for you, and you'll get past your hard spell too, good luck with that.  And B, have you ever tried spaghetti squash instead of pasta?  Yes, it still has some carbs, but it's a veggie, not a flour product.  I love that stuff.

Getting stuck at some point is only normal. As you loose some weight the balance of calorie intake versus how much you spend changes and you need to take it up a notch ! less food, more movement ! Once (10 years or more) I was stuck at 80 kg's for three months ... then I started to go down slowly, but surely all the way to 75 kg's ! I hope I will see those days once again !

Not really. I even managed to get in a nice hour-long run with Hybrid Holly. (who then showed me what a REAL athelete is like when she finished our run without hardly breaking a sweat, and then went for a 25 mile bike ride in the HOT California interior)  The week after Pismo was great, with a couple nice ten-mile runs Monday and Friday, with a shorter run Wednesday.

Only bummer is, I slipped on some gravel last Monday (two days ago), 7 miles into a sceduled 20-mile run and twisted my left knee. Had to stop my run at mile 8 to try and rub it out. Tried to finish the run, but the pain got pretty bad and I called it quits at almost ten miles. Skipped today's run to let it heal. Having this happen so close to my race is, shall we say (since this is a family forum) *unfortunate* ( insert various four-letter words of your choice here  ). Hopefully, it won't affect me too much. I don't think it will affect my stamina, but I'm hoping my knee doesn't give out on me during the race at mile 21, if you know what I mean. Keep your fingers crossed...

On a better note--- way to go Birol! I've finally managed to drop a few pounds and got below 200 myself, so we mustbe doing something right.:D

birol

Hey I am not doing that good ! I am only 5.8" and that is a lot of weight to carry around. This darnewd pill I am taking messed me up really good ! But I think now I know how to get even ! I look soo out of shape :( most of you guys are  6'+ with similar weights and it makes a huge difference  ...

Anyways, we will all get there and be smiling at the end :)

Glad to hear you all are doing good or maintaining. Especially you Dave/AbDiver (sorry about your knee). I started Atkins last November and have been on and off of it since. Lost 20 lbs then and have actulally (to my surprise) have kept it off. So, now I'm going to try to stay on it more faithfully. I have never been able to stay on a diet for more than a month, then get bored with it and slack off. The Atkins diet has been easier, I just have to get serious. That's why I bumped this thread up to the top to hear how all of you are doing. It helps encourage me. Keep up the good work and keep posting.

THANKS

It's so encouraging to read the good results people are getting--especially the news of the low-carb successes like Joan and Toni.  It finally becomes more a way of life than a diet, and thinking about it like that is really a help because it keeps me focused on avoiding stuff like pastas and white flour and SUGAR (the bane of my existence since I have a very determined Sweet Tooth :()

Hey, Runs With Whales, I hope you are all healed now and able to continue on, but  just remember that sometimes "stuff happens" and you cant always control that--"just in case" things dont work out the way you have planned.

Funny story.  I'm going from practically one end/side  of the country to the other this summer and wanted to keep track of my "fat" but didnt see any way to include a scale in my gear.  So, I invented a very lightweight "high tech measuring device" sure to keep me from falling too far off the wagon. :J:J:J

I threw a  sundress into my luggage.  The thing fits like the paper on the wall  and if I add any fat to myself, the dress will show that fact immediately.  So I try it on every morning.  (SO FAR, it still buttons!)

(Also, I just bought a pedometer to keep track of my mileage when I take my walks.)

NightOwl

Birol, just keep on keepin' on kinda like Aesop's tortoise and you  are sure headed in the right direction and you WILL get there.  And in better health :W  (Which is the real goal of all this anyhow except for Dave who is doing this out of love  for someone else.)

I have to confess that I have read very little of this thread. I think it is just about encouragement for one another, in the health/fitness area.

If that is true, I have to give myself a little pat on the back. I recently read/reading a book about marathoning/jogging, and I...

...ran my first mile since I was a teenager!!! I actually end up running a total of 2.5-3 miles during a workout, but I ran a mile without stopping!

It took me about six weeks to build up to it, including a bout with shin splints, but I did it! The weather is very hot and humid right now in TN, but I like the heat better than the cold!

Larry

PS: Holly is trying to exercise more too, with a few jogs mixed in with walking.
