Quote from: birolI am telling my son not go to the computer field ...... But to concentrate on other areas .......
I agree!  I've been doing this for over 22 years and the field has gotten so populated now.  Its hard to make the big money anymore.  You have to sacrifice family and friends to prove that you are a keeper.

When I first began in the IT field, it was wide open and I was getting 10 calls a day from contract firms wanting me to work for them.  I could write my own ticket back then.  Now, its months, or in Birols' case, years, between jobs.

The market has swung a bit over the last couple of months in certain areas of the country, but it is still not easy.

I wish the best of luck for anybody that is looking right now.

go to india, thats were our jobs went to in the computer field!

Acts 2:38 girl

Birol, maybe you should apply for a goverment job.  You can speak several languages and your great at computers.  I would think it would be a huge plus for you.  Or look for an international company that works in Turkey, the US, Canada, etc.  Anybody know any computer companies like that?

I'm sure there are several if you can figure out where they are.....  here's one  http://www.kontron.com/careers/crpositions.cfm

Also---Motorola, HP, Honeywell, Messier-Dowty, General Dynamic (gdcanada.com)....to name a few....

The difficult part is finding one in the right place, with the right job available, and the right salary!  :>

If one doesn't have insider connection at a company, it is next to impossible to get a job is what I am thinking .... All (and that is just a few) the interviews I had were arranged my friends working at places. I did not get one single interview based on sending a resume to a company.

WHy I am saying this, unless someone knows a job, and arranges for someone else to get an interview before the job is posted, the chances that that person will get the job is nil. Soo many people who are working and who know someone who needs a job .....

How close is the Turkish language to Arabic? I know the CIA is looking for arabic translators, they aren't that many of them around this part of the world!

birol

Not close at all. We use latin alphabet and it is a young language ... Some words sound similar between arabic and Turkish but the meaning is completely different.

Oh, CIA, yum yum :)

My last employer is pulling all their technical jobs back from India, the customers kept complaining that although the reps were nice, they couldn't understand them and they weren't ever able to help.

Something about losing customers doesn't help your bottom line if they're leaving because the company is too cheap to pay for local technical and customer support.

It is indeed tougher to get a position without an insider, but not impossible.  I have gotten a few jobs without knowing a soul.  What one does need is a name to address it to.  Remembering, of course, that the job of HR is to stop applicants, not facilitate them.

My resume is so bizarre, I think I get interviews just to find out what the heck it means.   What I wish is that I knew what I was going to do when I grow up.  I'm looking again although I am employed, but who knows what will happen.  I've been laid off twice - I just want to get to retirement and hop off the ride.

I have found a couple of jobs through friends...or friends of friends...but working very closely in my position with our HR and Recruiting departments at both this and my last two positions, we actually find the vast majority of our employees through Monster.com or other online venues.  It's actually how I found the position I've been in here for the last 4 years and I STILL get calls and emails every now and then from old online resumes.

I put my resume in so many online boards .... Sigh .... It must be just me ....... or my name ...... or they know I am an addict !

You haven't been listening to resume experts, have you?  If I had listened the last time to several 'experts', I would have dumbed down my resume and never, ever, have gotten on where I work.

Two experts told me that I should not list having a master's degree because it intimidates people.

When I am hiring, I can read a cover letter and resume in less than a minute.  I will immediately see any typos or other errors - they jump out at me.  I could care less about what color the paper is, but I can tell whether someone has put thought and effort into writing the cover letter, which should accent what I WANT to see in a prospective applicant.

Online boards to me are scary.  Too many people can pull your resume and make it their own.  Besides, it is hard to tailor a resume on an open board.

Be real careful on online applications, it will suck in a properly formatted resume and make garbage of it.  They're looking for keywords anyhow, but it really destroys your chances.  I mail it in to them, at least I stand a chance of someone reading it.

birol

They ( :Z ) made me shorten my resume to three pages ! It doesnt' describe all the fantastic stuff I did/can do anymore, it is a souped up version of a person who looks like a nobody ! My old resume was 7 pages but it at least properly described what I am capable of doing, oh well, I guess no one would read a seven page resume  eh :) After all who cares what I did 15 years ago ......

Gone-Camping

Wow, 7 pages! Perhaps that's why your still unemployed. I've always been told to keep the resume down to one page, two at the outside. The longer it is, the less likely it is anyone is going to read it. When they decide they want that much info, they will call you in for an interview to learn more. More than one page and it's likely to just get tossed aside as too big to read. A resume is just basically a quick referrence quide for the applicant. The prospective employer will go through an entire a stack of them quickly (he can't do 7 pages quickly), putting aside the ones that grab his interest. Then he'll go over THOSE that were set aside again, this time a little more carefully.

Somehow I get the feeling that your resumes are not making it to the first set-a-side pile...Just a guess, but an educated guess!

birol

You misread it, it is now 3 pages, and has been that way since I was layed off ...... We (me and them  :Z )  tried to make it down to two pages but the result was not acceptable  .... so we decided that 3 pages would have to do .....

Disclaimer : I didn't mean to post a Forum killer post that early at night :) I can't believe no one else posted anything in this forum after 9 pm, the weather is getting good any everyone is sleeping in their PU's in the driveway I guess
