My oldest son just came home from school today with tears streaming down his face. He is a senior and in the orchestra. He informed us tonight that he has comencement cerimonies that he has to play for next tuesday. One of his fellow seniors is going to have an early graduation.

You see, this senior is dying of cancer. He will not make it to the normal ceremonies (June 1st) and may not make it till the end of next week. It was his wish to be able to have his family see him graduate. So the school is having the graduation for him complete with all the pomp and circimstance(sp).

I think it is so inspiring that this young man with no future wishes to graduate and complete something that he has spent 13 years to do.

When we get to a point that we think that we are unable to complete something for some reason, lets think of this young man and what he is going through to get where he is. I don't know him, but I am very proud of him for wanting to complete something so important.

I think that is very inspiring! I wish that the "will to complete" was contagious and that many of the kids I know would catch it!
It's also good that the school has responded in such a way! I think there are many that would just say we can't disrupt things for one student! There seems to be a caring spirit there!
Thanks for posting it!

It is a sad story, but I agree the school is doing the right thing in having a graduation for the boy.  I hope it is a well attended ceremony.

I hope the gym is filled with hundreds of people (all cheering and clapping), maybe if we had an email address........

So touching ..... I admire the boy. Sometimes there are no words to express how we feel ....

I had such tears I had to make DH read this one for himself...I usually read the stories to him  ;>   This child is amazing and I wish we all could attend and congratulate the spirit and the will.  I'm also touched that the school would do this for one child.. Wow...I don't have words to say....

I want to commend your son for his sense of compassion.  It seems that today many of the kids do not see life past their own self.

That your son has such open expression of sympathy reflects on you as parents.

Good Job, well done!

Glad that the school is honoring his wish...

DD had almost a similar situation last year at her graduation...the week after prom (mid-May), one of the girls was taken to the hospital and diagnose with lukemia...it was touch and go.. she really wanted to attend her graduation, but with the risk of germs.. it was looking like she would not make the graduation.  The hospital and family came to a compromise and she was take in an ambulance to the cathedral (our catholic high school has graduation there); she was brought in at the beginning of the announcements surrounded by her family and hospital staff.  When her name was announced, she was wheeled up and the whole cathedral stood in a big ovation.  It was very moving and all the girls stood crying and applauding... it took quite a while to get the girls composed.

MntCamper,

Unfortunately they would not give out an e-mail address. Plus it will be a closed ceramony, just for family members only. I am very disapointed because we really wanted to go. But I can respect the wishes of the family and doctors. Apparently in his weakened condition, the doctors advised just the orchestra and other needed people. They are trying to minimize the possibility of infections and virus'.

Dayton Dave,
Thank you for your kind words.  We have always taught our kids that it is not wrong to show your feelings, wheather you are a man or women.  If you feel like crying than by all means do it.  It's better to cry than keep it all inside.  He is very compassionate, especially when it comes to kids.  He has plans on becoming a fire fighter so he will be able to help other people.  His girl friend says that is the thing that she loves best about him.
