How much propane is in your tank?

Back in 2000, I bought a magnetic guage that attaches to the side of the tank. As the propane gets lower, the color changes. It works ok but you need to be drawing propane for it to properly work. (And, it cost about $5).

While watching a show on the Food Network today, a cook said to pour some hot water down the side of the tank, wait about a minute and slide your hand down the same side as the water. The level left in the tank is the point where the temperature changes from warm to cold.

Just a free tip to avoid getting a tank refilled when it doesn't need it.  ;)

Like the mag strips, the hot water down the side also works better when you're drawing from the tank. It makes the demarkation show up better.

As always the best way is to weight the tank. The tank weight (tare weight) is stamped into the handles. Anything over that is propane.

The hot water down the side of the tank works a lot better on a hot & humid day, you only have to pour the water and look to see what part of the tank starts sweating!!! The condensation will form over the filled portion of the tank where it is cooler.

The "hot water" trick is how I check the tank for the BBQ grill too. It works pretty good.

Hey Dee, that's great! For only $2.90 I wouldn't need to touch the wet tank! LOL  :#
