Well, today I took another step toward total PUT (& PUX) addition. I not only got a Verizon Wireless phone, I got one that is 1xrtt compatible, meaning with the proper connection I can hook it to the lap top while camping, and connect at speeds up to 144k. I'll admit I didn't sign up for the high speed though, but did take the Quick-2-net plan for $5 per month unlimited 56k internet service (uses cell plan minutes durng weekdays though - free nights & weekends). :D
This will allow me to maintain my racing site while camping...and keep up with what's going on here too! Just have to hope my Laptop doesn't get too close to that campfire, I'm sure it won't take much to melt it down!!! ;)

:J  :Z I think you're on the road to recovery.......uh, you did say an addiction, didn't you? :D

Gone-Camping

Well, here's the big test! I've got the DSL on standby, and posting via my cell phone connection. Kinda slow, but when you're used to broadband speeds, I guess anything is slow! Actually, this is working really well! NOW I'm ready to go camping!!! :)

birol

I know how this feels ! It is a grat feeling to be able to connect to the net while moving ! I used to do that while I was working at Nortel networks ! We were developing data compression software to speed up the connections of cell phone internet users ! You will never do without it now Cliff.

P.S. How is the job hunt going ? You never answered my mails ....(Or probably not get them)

angelsmom10

Boy this is bad when you have to get your cell phone with capability to hook into PUT.:J

B-flat

That's only for just in case the campground doesn't have a hookup to a phone line for internet service. :J  :Z

Birol, if you sent mail, I never got them. I thought I upgraded my email addy in the profile, but will check it yet again! Who knows!

Job? Well, I'm currently working but not making quite enough, so I'm looking for something better.

birol

Oh man, and I was thinking that you were plain ignoring my e-mail messages. I was wondering what I had done to make you upset at myself , Geeez. Glad you are making *some* money .... Hopefully you get something real soon.

Birol, just bypass the PUT mailing machine and send email to webmaster@gonecamping.net ("webmaster@gonecamping.net") that way we know it'll get through!

Cliff,

Verizon: great coverage but a lousy website!

I looked high & low & can't find any 1xrtt phones or a plan that says "quick-2-net". Are you sure it's Verizon?

Which phone did you get? Maybe I can find the plan from the phone.

Gone-Camping

Well let's see, they just redesigned that website this week. They are now referring to the 1xrtt phones simply as phones that are "National Access" capable. The "National Access" is their HIGH SPEED (144K) plan. These are the phones to get in case you want to upgrade from the Quick-2-net to the high speed version. I do know that ALL Motorola Phones are capable of at least the Quick-2-net speeds! I got the LG VX3100 phone for $39.99, but that one seems to have disapeared from their website too! Most of the LG phones are also capable.

Note that quick-2-net is a 14.4 connection, but they use compression technology and "reduced" image quality to pick the speeds up to 56k like connections. I'm amazed at how well it's working, faster than some dial-up's that I've used. However, the trade-off is lower quality images for faster connection speeds. The image quality can be set on high quality, but the connection slows considerably. I also notice that their website says they do not charge for the quick-2-net service, yet they told me at the store it's a $5 per month access. Go figure!!!

Best I can send you to on the Quick-2-net is their Mobile Office FAQ's page where they make some referrence to it. It does exist, but they are trying to sell the $80 per month National Access plan, so they keep this one kind of quiet. Quick-2-net is available with unlimited access as a dial-up (#777) for only $5 per month. I found this out at their store, not online!!

QuoteWhat does the Mobile Office configuration software do?
Fourelle's VenturiTM compression software, which can double the performance of the Quick 2 NetSM feature for internet browsing, e-mail downloads, and file transfers.

How do I obtain fast access to the Internet?
Mobile Office subscribers can use the Quick 2 NetSM feature to quickly access the Internet, typically in less than 10 seconds.

All of your wireless connections are available through the Verizon Mobile Office Application. Just "double-click" the Verizon Mobile Office shortcut on your desktop. You do not need to maintain a separate account with an Internet service provider (ISP), since access to the Internet is part of the Mobile Office service offer. And, there are no incremental access or feature fees for this service.

Hope this helps!

It wasn't my fault, I swear.  I did not make anyone here buy more toys.   :D
