Leaving stuff in the firepit...

Personally, I get really annoyed when people leave any trash or butts in the firepit.  I don't want to burn their trash and I don't want to have to pick it up either.  The grossest thing was someone left a couple of diapers in the firepit.  What were they thinking?  We never leave anything on the site or in the firepit, always put stuff in the trash.  It's surprising though that many don't seem to give it a second thought?

We hate it when that happens. Some people are really rude.It probably wont hurt to mention it to the park manager-Maybe it'll show up in the printed,or posted, rules some day.

I feel the same way, and it seams that poeple who do this are the same type of persons who do not pick up after their dogs, let their kids run all over the camping area and cut thru your site if its closer to the restroom.

The only thing we ever leave in the pit is extra wood for the next person....

Same Here , We Always Leave The Site Better Then We Found It! I've Complain To The Office Many Times About Dirty Sites, And Ask Why They Don't Have Someone Checking The Sites After People Check Out.

That's one thing that I do like about our NP out here, the camp hosts are very good at going around when someone leaves, they check the site, empty the fire pit (if it needs it) and they also rake the entire graveled area where your trailer goes. They come around and collect the fee, and ask you if everything is OK. Nice touch.

Luckily, for the most part, the fire pits have been realativly clean.  We have encounterd cans or aluminum foil from time to time, but nothing major.  The bigger gripe I have is those who start a fire the day they are leaving and leaving it burn after they pull away.  Almost every time we've camped, we have seen this happen.... we then go over and throw water on it.  We don't even leave it smoldering.  People don't realize how dangerous that is.

Garbage in the fire pit and beer bottle caps all over the ground....just drive me crazy.

Last thing we do, Well the kids do it, is to walk around the campsite and look for anything that doesn't belong on the ground.  I have them pick it up.
The SP's around here have the mini-rangers go and clean the fire pits with broom and shovel. But I am always picking up butts and caps.. I use surgical gloves to pick up butts. But I dont mind the caps. But I can find all sorts of crap left behind.
I like to leave the site better than when I arrived. I carry a shovel and rake and I can clean most messes up .. JMHO

The host's in the SP we frequent most of the time are supposed to police the sites every morning for when people leave, but there are only a few that have actually done it (at least that we have seen) (every loop has a host).

When we camp with the teens, we make sure that they clean up also.  We caught them the first trip not picking everything up, but their response was that it wasn't theirs and it definitely had been there from before we got there since it was pop cans that they did not have, but we did explain that we still pick up whatever is not supposed to be there, and every year, as soon as they get there, they go around and pick up and before they leave do the same thing.  In fact, they even move leaves around and look for bottle caps pushed into the ground.

What gets me is cigarette butts all over the campsite, I was a smoker for many years and was taught to field strip my cigarette butts in the army. I always did , but since I quit 11 years ago seeing them anywhere really gets to me, it just seems so dirty and disgusting.

I'm allergic to cigarette smoke so I don't appreciate the butts either, but have you noticed that smokers who have quit are the ones who are very disgusted with those who still smoke, in fact sometimes even more.

FIL (rest his soul) and boss are ex-smokers and both hate it in a restaurant when someone smokes close to them.

Well, in the eastern rally we realzied that a person at a site acroos/below us was extremely rude and left a lot of stuff next to their fire pit. I mean, A LOT !!!!!

After the site was empty for a day and no one came to clean it up, I sent the kids to clean it up, I couldn't bear to see all that stuff to lie there for everyone to see !

We burned all that left over wood at out PIT with great pleasure :):) There were like 5 or 6 big logs, yummmmyyyy  :J

I hope we didn't steal anyone elses wood ..... the site was empty so I thought no one owned it and people just left it there ....  :p

This is probably my biggest camping pet-peeve. I am amazed at all the junk some people will leave in the firepit, which we clean out before we use it. One time someone must have burned a huge candle in the firepit before we got there - there was blue wax all over the cooking grate and in the pit. Gross. I am also amazed at what people will burn - there's nothing worse than your camping neighbor burning all their trash, including plastic - yuk! We also clean up the campsite while we are there - I wish people would be more careful.

I've heard that expression before what does it mean to "field strip" cigarette butts???
