Has anyone camped at Sampson State Park before?

Yes, I stayed there last Labor Day weekend. The CG is nice, there are many shaded sites. The best ones look like they are the outside sides in the back of each loop. They tend to be wooded and private. There are few water view sites that may be hard to get. They have a small beach on the lake. The finger lakes have great water but the beaches tend to be more like gravel. They have an awsome marian if you have a boat. If you have children I suggest that you travel 15 miles up the lake to Seneca Lake State Park. There is no camping there but they have a nicer beach and a great water park. No slides just fountains the kids can play in. Admission to the park is free with your camp ground pass.

Sampson State Park is our family's favorite campground because of the excellent opportunities for bike riding.  As an old WWII Navy Base, the park is full of overgrown roads that make great biking trails.  You can ride and ride.
