Ok, here's my yucky chore for the day.

We have my SIL and BIL and their 3 kids visiting from CT.  We have a new pool.  We have white carpeting throughout the house.  I decided that I was going to pick up a spare porta-pottie to keep outside, in a semi private area so that soggy wet pool users can use the outdoor pottie instead of tracking water and mud throughout the house.

Well, I showed SIL and family how to use the potty and told them the rules.  No poops, use a tiny bit of tp, pump and flush, close the lid, etc.  I neglected to tell them to let me know when the holding tank was looking pretty full.  Well, just now I got a call for help.... "I can't flush the potty!!!!"  I go and look.  The holding tank is full and now the bowl is 1/2 full of pee, poop and tons of tp!   YUCKO!  Can't seperate the top half from the bottom because all the stuff in the bowl will pour all over the place. AAARRRRRGGG!!

So I get out the rubber gloves and start scooping the stuff out of the bowl and plopping it in the regular toilet.  But of course, it's dribbling it's soupy, yucky mess all over the bathroom floor.  So now, I need to clean and disinfect the bathroom floor too!  All the while, the visiting family is out back splashing around in the pool having a merry old time!

Well, job is done now, Thank Goodness, and I'm going to try to sit out in the sun and relax for just a FEW minutes, until the next disaster!

At least your pool is warm enough to get into.  It's still a bit chilly up here.

oh gross....Maybe if one of them had had to clean it out, they'd remember the rules next time!  Blech.........

oh, Cindy  :W   I forgot to tell you  :( that one of the disadvantages of moving to The Sunshine State is that you kind of run a hotel part of the year for visitors at first.

The first couple years when we moved from  Downers Grove, Illinois to Coral Gables, Florida,(the Miami area)  my folks could just as well have opened a B&B.  Not that we didnt love seeing the visitng rellies from far away, but  it was a lot of work.

After the novelty wore off, it lightened up except for my grandparents who stayed with us every winter   :swear:  until they finally got a place of their own in Naples :#

:yikes: I would have had them empty the potty.  I would have asked the BIL to carry the very heavy over loaded potty to the bathroom(after placing it in a garbage bag so he couldn't spill it.  I would have given  SIL the gloves and scoop and told her to let me know when she had it lowered enough so that it could be dumped.  I bet they wouldn't have over filled it again. :-()

Sorry, but I'm with Tracy.  This is one of the times when being a good hostess has been completely eclipsed by being a bad guest.   Someone who totally disregards EVERY one of the instructions that you gave them needs a wakeup call.   I know that they're family, and you love them (for the most part) but you don't do them any favors by allowing them to act like boorish slobs.  And I bet that if you had made them clean the mess themselves, they would have been right back in the pool when they were done, enjoying themselves, in no time.

well, it's too late for this go-round but the excellent advice  by Tracey and Toni made me stop and think a bit.

NEXT TIME--try to find a way to post "THE RULES" nearby to your open air potti.  Also, explain them verbally.   Then add:

"If you fail to follow these rules and there is a problem YOU WILL BE THE ONES DEALING WITH IT!!  No exceptions!"

AND THEN, IF THERE IS ever ANYTHING LIKE THIS AGAIN, YOU JUST STICK TO YOUR THREAT AND TELL THEM WHERE THE CLEANING SUPPLIES ARE.

My guess is that NO ONE will ever do this more than once!

Very good idea Elisa. :eyecrazy:

WOW...Iwould have had them empty it, at least they are not "going" in the pool. You will have to get one of those signs from a hotel that flash no Vacency (sp) !!     As far as white rugs go you are brave:)):)

I would just leave it there and expect them to clean it. Would that be too rude ? I mean, they are adults after all ! They should teach their kids proper behaviour right ? And if they fail, it is upto their parents to compensate and clean up any mess they do. No body should have to clean someone elses "stuff" like this.

This has me shivering ... ewwwwwwwww :%

Yes, I agree, good ideas.

Also agree about the eyeballs!  Mine did just that a few times today!!!!

Trust me folks.... it was WAAAAAYYY easier for me to clean it up.  If I had left it up to them, SIL would have told her DH to do it and he would have put it off way longer than it would take for the potty bowl to fill up completely!  Then they would have made a total mess trying to get it emptied and I would have been left cleaning up the aftermath.  Ohhhhh... I wanted to leave it for them.  But I know them. I know how it would have turned out.

I did try to avoid cleaning up after them all day though.  This am I emptied the dish washer before they all got up.  All day long, I took care of my own dishes and those of my children.  You guessed it... their dishes sat in the sink, piling up all day long.  My DH finally just loaded their dishes.

Sigh.... I do love them but visiting relatives are like fish.  After a few days they both start to stink.  I'm ready for some peace and quiet.

The good news is that this group is the last of the visitors for a while.  Everyone else has already been here.  One right after another.  Seeing that they are all from the Northeast and April is the typical vacation time for all of them, I think next year we are going to try to be "unavailable" next April.

Haha, I think that i'd be looking for a sign to hang on the pool gate that says, "Pool closed until housework is all done".
