It was a progression thing. In the beginning, there was St Paul and it was all good. Then Minneapolis was born just across the river. Those that couldn't spell would write "St. Paul and that other city on the other side of the river". This was about the time that a new aeroplane was discovered and few folks liked writing "that plane with the engine on one side and the one on the other side too". So, to honor them both, the Twin Cities were thus named...much like the twin-engined airplane.
