Quote from: Camping CoxesHey, remember that whole "nitwit skateboarder" discussion about the damaged roof between Scott and I? Well, my nitwit skateboarder fell off his aforementioned long board Friday night and managed to fracture his wrist! So he's banned from skateboarding for a few weeks, which means he'll have more time to whine to me about how bored he is. And he just started playing water polo, remember, and if it's truly a fracture (they think it is, but it really isn't until a radiologist says so) he's out for the rest of the short season. Great. I guess I should count myself fortunate that this is his first broken limb and he's the ripe old age of 14.
I missed that discussion but I hope that David only has a bad sprain and not a true fracture so that he doesn't have to miss H2O Polo season. Anyone who can be so accomodating of a three-year-old with skateboard envy deserves to get a break (pardon the pun) on a possible fracture.  :)

Lori --

It was in the General discussion talking about a member who had a skateboarder ride across the aluminum roof of his trailer, leaving deep skateboard wheel grooves :yikes: .

I'm hoping we can get an answer as to fracture vs. sprain soon so we'll know what to expect.  In the meantime, he's going to go to the last half of the morning practices so he can watch the scrimmages and instruction so he'll at least learn the game and strategy better.  The first half of the practice is swimming laps, and since he can't do that, and it's at 5:00 AM, I see no point in having him sit and watch them swim for an hour.

Dee4j

I agree Trina watcthing someone else swim is not very fun at 5 am but then again I'm such a fabulously happy person in the morning :morning:

Scott correct me if I'm wrong, but I do belive the megapixels in our cameras have no bearing on the webshots results..its just the quality of printing in larger sizes.  so all is good.. :p  is it Oct. yet?

I'm going to call Vail just before we go to verify the fire rule. With all the evacuations etc.. they may not allow fires at all, even in the enclosed pit. which in that case I won't need to pack firewood and Jim doesn't need to bring his fire pit

I was there about a month ago, and fires were allowed in the approved containers.  Of course, it in the mid-90s, getting down to about mid-70s at night when we were there so we didn't even want a fire, but we could've had one if we would have wanted one.

What really struck us when we were there was how close the fire had come to the cg.  I mean, right up to the sites, but thankfully, nothing was damaged or lost.  The other thing that we saw on our last trip there is that cg management has been working hard and has opened up a bunch of sites to the right of the pool--they aren't shown on the camp map.  They have W/E/S and are well shaded.  They could be nice for a large group like us, since that section is off the main road and gets much less traffic coming through it.

Here's the latest:  David's pediatrician, in looking at the hand/wrist, feels it is likely broken, even though the radiology report came back negative.  He also said even if it isn't broken, it's in a place that you can really do some damage in as far as tendons, ligaments, etc.  So he's ordered a follow-up set of x-rays for tomorrow or the next day instead of the two weeks ER told me.  He doesn't want it going that long.

David's hand is really swollen still.  The thickness between his palm side and back side of his hand is about twice as thick as normal and his fingers are fat and puffy instead of long and slender.  He said when he moves a certain way, he feels like bones are rubbing together.  So we go tomorrow for more x-rays.  If it's not broken, I don't understand why he's still so swollen and it hurts so much.  I've had some pretty severe sprains and I never swelled that bad.  He's trying to hang in there.  Carrying his heavy backpack is a challenge with one arm/hand, and God forbid a 14YO boy use a rolling backpack.

So I'll let you know how this soap opera ends up!  I just wish they'd give him a real cast so he wouldn't feel it so much if he gets bumped.

Trina,
Boy it must be frustrating waiting to find out what you are dealing with.  I wish David a speedy recovery!

Dee,

Your class and Memory Maker's seminar are correct.  In my opinion, Megapixels are overrated as a measurement of a camera's usefulness.  People who are only going to e-mail pictures or post them to Webshots will usually resize the picture to fit onto the screen anyway.

For those who are going to PRINT pictures, a 2MG camera give "Photo Quality" 4x6" prints.  And a "Photo Quality" 4x6 print doesn't get any better by throwing more megapixels at it.  So if one was only going to print 4x6 prints, a 2 MG camera would do that.

But a 3MG, which will do a PQ 5x7 might be a better choice. It allows you to crop a picture by an inch on each side and still get a Photo Quality 4x6.

Just for information, my dad asked me for suggestions on buying a first digital camera which he was taking on a 2-week trip to Africa.  I suggested a Canon S1-is, which is "only" a 3 MG camera, but has a 10x optical zoom (35-350 mm equivilant) with built in Image Stabilization.  Great camera, which I have now seen in Staples and CompUSA for $100 retail.  That's a great deal.

For him, he was able to really ZOOM in on the animals and got over 400 shots at highest resolution on a 512 card.  And he'll never print out anything more than a 5x7 print.  He basically just wants to e-mail.

Dang--alarm is going off. Time to head for work.

Scott

Trina--a "rule of thumb" for determining breaks vs. sprains and strains.  Breaks will have pinpoint pain over the break site...a sprain or strain is a little more generalized.  Good for the doctor for keeping on top of this...wrist and hand fractures are not to be messed with.  There is so little circulation there that you want the fracture to heal properly or it may never heal at all.  If it is in fact fractured.

Good for David's pediatrician. I'd rather have my child's doctor conservatively aggressive, than passive and possibly overlooking the correct diagnosis. It sounds like you've got a good one.

Of course not!! Yeesh, mom, that's so uncool!!! ;)

We will keep praying for the best of news for David and his hand/wrist!

Trina, maybe this will give you a smile.  Griffin just walked up to me while I was typing that last reply and asked me if I was "playing" the Halloween rally (he immediately recognizes the PUT site).  I started to say no, but before I could get the word out, he asked me if "Twina be there?"  I told him no, and that David had hurt his wrist.  Griffin said for David to "not forget to wear his helmet."

Just wanted to pass along Griffin's concern.  He's hoping for the best too! :)

Dee4j

Wow Poor David, nothing worse than dying iin pain and not getting any anwer

there's definatly something going on in there maybe an MRI might show something. but what do I know I'm not a Dr., but I did play one on TV ;)

tell David

WE WISH HIM A SPEEDY RECOVERY!!!!!

What a cute kid.  And so sweet to be concerned for David.  From Griffy's mouth to David's ears!  The doctor got on him about not wearing his helmet and told him he got lucky.  I told him he has a helmet, the helmet he wanted, but I don't skateboard alongside him so I can't make sure he wears it.  He does wear it on his bike.  So if Griffy doesn't want to wear his helmet, you can remind him that David got hurt and he wasn't wearing his helmet!

I didn't realize I hadn't updated since the last X-ray.  Still no break.  If it's still sore by Tuesday (one week later) they'll repeat the x-ray.  At this point he's still very sore, and in fact iced it tonight because it was hurting.

Scott, it does seem to be at one location.  However, it hurts to move his fingers, but I think that's because any movement of your fingers moves your palm a little bit, and also because he's been braced with his thumb completely immobilized, he hasn't been using his hand and it's probably getting stiff.  At this point, he's one week post injury.

Gosh, I'm wishing I was camping with you guys.  But you only have a 20 year reunion once in your life, so that's where I'll be, so I can be reminded why I didn't like most of those people 20 years ago!  :yikes: J/K

Trina let david know my friends 13 yr old nephew spent 5 months in a coma because he didn't have his helmet on. after a year of therepy who could hold a phone and say a few words and the scars on his brain and the frustration from being the way he is has given him violent episodes and suicidal tendencies.

my neighbore son got a ticket for not wearing his. he had to do alot of chores to work that off!!

SO DAVID....PLEASE WEAR YOUR HELMET!

and I hope your wrist feels better soon

Final update (I promise) -- David's left hand was casted yesterday.  After three different dates of x-rays and continued pain and swelling ahd limited movement, the orthopedist said it's probably a hairline fracture, which doesn't always show up well, and he needs to wear a cast for the next three weeks.  He's already have a hard brace for 12 days previous, so that's almost five weeks total.  David likes it better because the cast is more comfortable, although heavier, and he feels like his thumb is better protected.  Someone at school walked very close to him the opposite direction in a hallway, causing David's thumb to get caught on the other kid and yanked back, causing a lot of pain and bad swelling, so he's glad he has the cast now.

Oh, well.  One more episode in the soap opera that is my life.:eyecrazy:

Glad to hear that David's hand is more protected, although I'm sorry that it sounds like water polo may be a goner for him.  :(

Ahhh, too true, but soon, our kids will all grow up and move out.  The house will suddenly become too big and we'll be wishing for the excitement and vitality that define our lives now. :%

Okay who am I kidding? We'll all be dancing a jig on our picnic tables as we go camping every weekend! ;) :D
