I'm a member of the Good sam club and I saw an application for Campground hosts for 2005. It seems like a cool thing to do and camp all summer long.
Has anyone done this? and do they allow pop-ups and kids?

It depends on the campground.  In PA state parks you have to take a training course and stay at least 2 weeks in the campground.  Good luck. :)

I've seen a couple of camp hosts over the years in popups, even talked to an older couple who were camp hosts in Alaska in a popup, but I've never seen camp hosts with kids.  I'm not so sure having kids really has much to do with it as long as they are old enough to take care of themselves while you're doing the required host chores. It just usually has been older retired couples that I've seen as hosts. I personally think it would  be a wonderful summer job...heck, an all the time job if I had a large motor home!! :)

In Vermont State Parks, we've seen Hosts in Pop-ups and hosts with Children, but have never seen hosts with Pop-ups AND children!!! It's something I always said I'd do if I won the lottery, well, one of the things I've always said I'd do!!!
As someone else said, theer are probably minimum times to be slotted.

what does a camp host do?

Their campsite is usually located near the entrance to the campground.  They are there to answer questions, make sure noise or other problems are reported to the rangers, check that fires are out, and that any messes are cleaned up. :)

At some of the Georgia State Parks (and maybe all), the hosts are responsible for also cleaning the bathhouses and working in the registration office.

As others have said...camp hosts in several of our local parks (State, national, and some private) do some general maintenance, campsite and bathroom clean up, registration, make sure people follow rules, work in the camp store, that sort of thing...  They usually agree to "work" a certain number of hours a week for the free campsite.   :>

I think camp hosts have to be up in time for breakfast.

That rules you out, Dee. :p;):D

Oh boy, that might rule out Dee4j.

In Virginia State Parks, camp hosts sign up for 1 to 3 months at a time. Some parks have just one host, some have up to three - one in each campground.

At Pocahontas, we have one host who gets free camping with E/W/S and a local phone line in exchange for 30 hours a week volunteering. They do twice a day campsite checks (to be sure everyone has paid and locate those who didn't return to the office to tell us what site they took.) They also keep a check on the bathrooms, do light cleaning, and let the park police staff know if there are any problems. Right now, Pocahontas is without a host, and the extra work on the rest of us is difficult.

When you sign up with Virginia, they will ask you which area of the state you would like to be put in - and meet those requests whenever possible. I think the National Park System is similar. I have a good friend who turned 65, sold her house and everything in it, bought a truck and trailer, and has been hosting full time ever since. Right now she is at Acadia in Maine. She has been everywhere from Yellowstone to the Everglades in the past three years.

What a Life!!!

Wow..this just makes me so envious..>I'd love to be able to host at Pocahontas also...but I'm still at the point of having to work full time!  LOL    Ahhh..what a life though!

I suppose it depends on where you are.  I have a friend that used to host during the summer and it was a paying job. They worked pretty hard, she did registrations all day and he did the cleaning and maintenance.

Of course each day was different and when there was free time, it was free..lol
