Strangest PU I've ever seen (Picture)...

True Coleman, Fleetwood didn't start making PUs until the late 80's.  This one has the crank up in the front like my 1987 did.  Maybe they added the trunk to the rear of the PU.  Moving the access door would be a major job.  You have to have the frame in the side walls to secure the door, so I don't think the door was moved. :)

WHile the PU has some extensive mod's. Notice the AC cover on the front of the trailer it's in it's oringinal configuration and the metal on the side looks like a Mod'ed stove table.

PS: Fleetwood bought Coleman's plant in 1989.

At first, I thought the camper might have been reversed as well. And there are some interesting arguments about whether it is or isn't.

My best argument that it ISN'T is that the front doesn't look like it has every had any taillights on it. Maybe some fancy sheetmetal working was done.

I also like the argument FOR its reversal, that the lights are switched. The rearmost light is sure forward quite a bit.

Quote from: bearbaitI've seen a few pop ups with the access door on the road side of the trailer in campgrounds, so some manufacturers used to do that.
My first thought was, like us, more often than not our door ends up on the "ugly" side of the site. With our little 8' box it wasn't an issue to unhook, everyone grab a corner and steer this thing around so our door would be where we wanted it.  With the 12' that isn't an option most places.  So maybe that's the reason for the flip.  Seems like a lot of trouble.

I think a call or visit is in order to solve this mystery.

Here's a thought:  Our NNC buddy Surfcal has half a pop up, meaning that his camper only has a single bunk on the back end of the trailer (where the storage trunk is on this one in question.)  Maybe this camper was built the same way as Surf's and only has one bunk off the front of the camper.

That is a very interesting thought. :)

Did you notice there is no bumper on the "rear"? If the Hitch was switched from the trunk end wouldn't that leave a lack of bumper? The running lights look as if you could switch light covers to change the yellows to red and the red ones are rather far from the back. The spare tire mount is strange too. Is that an A/C on the "front"?
HHHMMMMM???
Someone please solve this mystery quick!!! I'm dying to know!

The access door in the storage trunk is also on the curb side of the PU making me think it was not turned around.  The metal box on the front of the PU looks like it could be a cover for a home AC unit.  The opening from a front storage  trunk into the PU would be an easy way to install a home AC unit.  Maybe the trunk was removed from the front of the PU and reinstalled on the rear.   :)

I looked at it again and forgot about the front waist level crank.  The front crank is in the same spot as it was on my 1987 Coleman.  I think they must have added the trunk to the rear or it was a limited run PU model with a rear trunk.

Cliff do you have any pictures of the back of the PU.  My 1987 had the waist high crank in the front and a bumper level crank in the back.

Cindy...yes the Area code is 757...

As for a rear picture I don't have it. I was on a back country road with no shoulder, so I had stopped in the middle of the road to take the first picture. Then a truck come up behind me so I pulled into their driveway and took the second picture. I felt a little funny being on someone elses property taking pictures of their stuff, so I left rather quickly.

I'm inclinded to think this was a limited run production model by Coleman, apparently late '80's, or a very early Fleetwood version of it. Obviously it was a poor design!

I called the number, got a 'foriegn' accent on an answering machine, I think he said 'Glock USA' (meaning I don't want to mess with this guy)...

I know that Jayco will custom build a pop up for any special needs,  such as handicapped access and such.  I'm sure other manufacturers will also.  So my new theory is this, this was a special order for some reason,  only the owner is going to be able to answer all this.

I found a problem with the "flip" theory.  The wheel well still lines up with the wheel.  And the measurment from the trunk to the wheel does not match the distance from the wheel to the "front" of the box.  So it was made that way.  Also,  if that trunk was once on the tounge,  then we would see a big gap up there between the front of the box to where the propane tank is (to get the wheel well to line up) where the storage trunk once would have been.

I think it was a special order or else some limited edition that the manufacturer threw out in the marketplace to see what the customer reaction would be.  Sort of like a test.

Ok, I made the call just now.

Spoke with the owner.  A bit hard to understand... he had a middle eastern accent but was very nice.

It is an 85 or 86 Coleman

He says it's in perfect condition.  Canvas looks like new, no holes tears.

Has 2 queen bunks one dinette.

All new lights.

I asked about the storage trunk.  I mentioned it looked a little different since usually the trunks are on the front.  He said they added the trunk to the rear of the camper after they purchased it.  He said the trunk is made with all aluminum. (even the framing?  to make it lighter? I didn't ask.)

This seems to explain why the rearmost lights are not at the very end of the camper.  The lights are in the original position.  The trunk was added and the lights were not repositioned.

He "claims" no problems with sway.

Asking price $1400-1500

Gone-Camping

Well now, that certainly clears that up! All I got was his answering machine when I tried to call him....
