LOL

Thanks Chas.

It should be AR not AK.

AK may be in the future for 2006.

Precisely!  Fuel is only one part of the camping cost equation and I for one won't let it keep me away from the campgrounds.

For the sake of arguement:
Suppose you have 2,000 miles of trips planned and you manage to get 15 mph.  If the price of fuel goes up  by $1.00 per gallon your increased costs would "only" be ~$133.   I spend that much at the grocery store buying goodies for the trip :)

I agree!!

I'm with Charlie ~ I will make my 'road trip' (1600 miles round-trip this year) no matter what the fuel costs.  The group I'm going to camp with is so worth every gallon!!   :D

Since owning a PU most of our trips have been long ones ~ mostly because it was a cheaper way to travel.  I look at rising fuel costs as an opportunity to explore the great state of Minnesota ~ which we've overlooked!!

Guess there's a balance in there somewhere, eh?  ;)

Oh! and the kids can eat rice cakes or something instead of goodies!   ;)  :)  :D  :p

I just wish my longer roadtrips were more dependent on gas prices than other factors - like work schedules & kids sport schedules!  Seriously since the price of gas has gone up we really haven't used that as a determining factor on where we go.  We do most of our camping fairly close by with a couple trips a year into Minnesota & Wisconsin.  I've been hoping for a Colorado trip for about 3 years now and it hasn't been gas prices keeping me from it!

All of our trips are 200 miles or less so it won't stop us, not that it would if they were all 500 miles either.

We have gone back to tent camping on many of the short weekend trips, especially to Maine, but not because of gas prices. Just that I can have the tent set up, the air mattresses blown up, my battery, inverter and CPAP (Sleep Apnea)set up, and be headed to the beach or favorite seafood restaurant in less than 20 minutes!

Of the 4 trips to Maine last year, we tent camped 3 of them and had a blast! I suspct we will do it again!

Unfortunately I fear that increasing gas prices are here to stay. In Ontario the prices are sitting at approximately .80/litre, which translates to approx. $3.20/gal. I have to keep buying gas to go about my daily life, work, kids, errands etc. I don't think I will let the $ of gas effect how i spend my leisure time! What we are thinking of though is buying a little 4 cyl car to do the weekly around town driving, the Yukon is a killer for gas in the city.

Most of our weekend trips are about 1.5-2 hours.  The increases in gas prices might add $10 or so to the weekend cost.  Not a deal breaker.

The cost of Illinois State parks went up last year (I think from 11 to 20), not certain about Wisconsin.  That won't stop me either.  Work schedules and family gatherings will continue to have a much greater impact on how often we can get out.

Am planning on a trip first part of April from SC to massachusetts and maine then back to SC. Then in june, it is back up to Mass, Maine, then out to Illinois, and down to Kentucky, I won't worry about gas prices, but if they would go back down to 12 cents a gallon I wouldn't complain!!;)

;) Hi everyone , new guy here. Well, kind of-- I was a member way back in the earlier days of PUT. Even got a magnetic "PUT" sticker still on the PU.
Me and Mrs. campcook thought we would find a reasonable priced "permanent site" for this year due to the cost of fuel. If we get antsy for more adventure, we will pull the old tent out of mothballs. :p
   GOOD TO BE BACK---

We take a 2 week camping vacation every year and this year we had already decided to go to Maine, with stops in Virginia, Pennsylvania and near Boston. We will go no matter what the gas prices become. (pretty obvious we can't tell the future):D

I figure this trip alone will be over 2,400 miles. Ouch!:yikes: I just did the math. Oh well, at least the "hotel" rates are locked in.

BARDENL

I appreciate the information on gas prices in Canada because we are making a 6 - 8 week trip to Quebec and the Canadian maritimes, including Newfoundland this summer.  We're estimating over 5000 miles total. Is that $3+/gallon in US or Canadian dollars?  It won't be a big burden for us - we make 19 mpg with our little 6-cyl truck and light camper, but we are spending 3 weeks in Newfoundland with some friends who have a motorhome.  They only get 7.5 mpg!

Also, any suggestions on the best form to carry money for Canada?  AAA gives a poor rate on their travellers' checks, and I hear the credit card companies are beginning to charge some heavy extra fees.

BTW, come the end of May we'll both be retired.
