I am looking for some central and southern camp gounds advice in Indiana? Has anybosy stayed at Catarac falls? Any information would be helpful.

Garrett

Jay,
I have never stayed at Cateract Falls, but in that General area I can high recomment McCormick's Creek, Spring Mill or Shakamak SPs.  I have also heard good things about Brookville Lake.  I have driven by Cateract Falls several times, but have never even driven thru it to see what it has to offer.  It is also one of those parks that i have never even heard any one discuss.  You might try your posting your question  over at the Great Lakes Pop Up club (//www.GLPUC.org/forum).  You should find somebody there that is familiar with that particular park.

Hello' I'm a first time poster and long time reader and this site is great for all who are into camping. We go to the yogi Bear camp in Fremont Ind. just south of the Mi. border. 500 + sites, lake playground organized stuff each day for kids. We've been there a lot over past 2 yrs. and love it. The staff is very nice, every time weve been there. It's by Lake George just south of Coldwater Mi. off I-69.

                                   Hope this helps

There are limited camping facilities in the immediate Indy area. The Morgan Monroe State Forest is a great place to camp, but no showers.  In Indy itself, the Indiana State Fairgrounds has camping.  East of Indy on 74 the privately owned campgounds Hidden Paradise at St Paul, just off of Interstate 74. is a good place to stay.

Garrett's right, those are some of the best in southern Indiana.  McCormick's Creek is the closest to Cataract.  A little further south even is Clifty Falls in Madison, almost on the Ohio river.  Good hiking there.

Cataract has no camping, it's purely a daypark.  It's a pretty scenic one, we get over there once a year or so and have a nice picnic.  The falls are pretty scenic, and there's a lot of good picnic area.  Pit toilets only. But no camping :(

I live just south of Indy and we just went camping at McCormicks Creek a few weeks ago and can't wait to go back. Restrooms are very clean, as is the campground. Lots of great trails to hike on, horse rides, pool. I highly recommend it.

Excellent.  Yes, I have a lot of fond memories at McCormick's Creek.  a little over 15 years ago I asked my wife to marry me on the fire tower there as the full moon was coming up - she said yes :):):):)

We'll be going to Shakamak over July 4 weekend, will report how that was.  According to my dad, we went camping there once, but I was apparently three, so don't remember a whole lot

We live in NW Indiana, so we go to Tippacanoe St Park a lot. It is a good place to get away to. We went to Racoon Lake SRA for 4 days during the covered bridge festival and the place is really great!

We also checked out Pokagon this year, and we had a lot of fun there as well.

Almost forgot, we went to Spring Mill this year as well and had a great time.

Indiana has a great online reservation system that we always use and have never had a problem.

I forgot to report on Shakamak, sorry!  Well, it was great, especially for July 4th weekend.  It has a phenomenal swimming pool with a big waterslide, we were there every day.  Hiking was pretty good, and there's horseback riding and hayrides available.

The friends we went with went back in early October.  It was about the only park they could find that wasn't completely booked up.  They loved it in the fall too - there was hardly anyone there.

Of course, all the IN state parks have clean restrooms and nice shower facils.  You would hope so for $22/night!

another good park is leiber state rec area. It is on cagles mill lake. It has a beach hiking trails nature center pool. We live about 20 minutes from there. Last year we camped in the non elec and had a very nice site, even over labor day. This is our first year with a pup. We also have jet skis that we take over to the lake so this is really convenient since we have to make two trips( one with the camper and one for the skis).

We camped in Shakamac earlier this year.  Great place!.  The staff is excellent and recommended the best site for us.  Great hiking trails.  The hilly loop around the lake is an excellent bike ride (an earlier site for road bicle races until the roads were oiled and chipped).  The pool and boat rentals were not open yet, but the pool and waterslide look very well maintained.  You should certainly enjoy it.  Also, nearby are the Vigo County parks, all three offer camping.  I have only stayed at Fowler park so far; it is excellent.
