Hello,
I have only had my popup a few months.  I have a 1998 Skamper and just discovered that I have brakes!  The popup has a square 6 hole socket on the tongue adapted to my Jeep's flat 4 prong plug.  What will I need to do to make the brakes work?  I have no battery on the Popup.  Must I get a battery and brake controller, or can the Jeep be wired to accept the 6 hole prong and the Jeep brakes activate the brakes on the popup?  A friend said that he had a horse trailer that worked this way.  I really don't want to spend the money on the brake controller and battery this year if I could avoid it, but I think the brakes will make towing safer.

Thank you so much for any help.

You'll have to have the Jeep set up with a 6 or 7 pin adaptor.  The 4 pin is just working your brakelights.  To work the brakes you'll need the extra wires.  Then you will need to get a brake controller, but I don't think you need a battery though since the brake controller is operated using your vehicles battery.

In any case, I recommend the Prodigy brake controller.  It's about $99 on some websites or about $120-140 at a local RV store.

You won't regret it.  Especially after the first close call on the highway.

Short answer is.....Yes, you'll need a brake controller, and, if you expect the "break-away" switch function to work, you'll need a battery.
I used a very inexpensive controller on my pop-up and never had any problems. It was a "powerstop" brand I got thru JCWhitney's. If your camper has brakes, it is wise to get a controller installed or DIY.

Here's one place you can get started looking for one.

Best of luck.
