Ok - we are considering purchasing a PU for weekend camping trips in AZ.  I notice quite a few are canvas but have the a/c option. Is the a/c effective in AZ desert heat? The goal is to go to the mountains where it is cooler; however, it still can reach 99 there at the peak of the day (before dropping to 70 at night)....

Thanks, Taiji

Air Conditioning in a PU works very well.

Without AC, the inside of the PU may be 20 degrees higher than the outside temperature.

If your day time high reaches 99, with the AC, the inside of the PU could get down to as low as the low 80's.

I would suggest that you purchase bunk end roof covers from Popupgizmo's to reflect the heat from getting into the PU.

The one problem that you won't be expieriencing like all of us here in the east is the coil freezing up due to the high humidity. :)

We don't have a/c, but we do camp in the CA and AZ deserts from Sep/Oct until April/May, using our Popupgizmo bunkend covers.  They're the BEST.  We use twice as many clamps as come with the covers, because as you well know, wind and desert seem to go together.  You'll have a great time.  Sleeping off the ground and away from the desert critters is pure luxury.

Taiji - a few years back, right here on Popup Times, there were a couple of western campers (i.e., those who lived in a dry heat area), and they seemed to have used a swamp cooler which worked out well for them. Because of the high humidity here on the east coast, they don't work very well in this area.

Might give you an idea or two.
