I have a Thetford Electra Magic toilet in my PU and was wondering what brand deodorant everyone uses? I have tried a few and I am not completely satisfied with them. The toilet gets less than half full and.....well.....you can guess what the problem is!

Can anyone recommend a brand that you have had good luck with?

Thanks!

My Trailmanor has the Electra Magic toilet in it as well.  We use the scented aqua-kem http://www.campingworld.com/browse/products/index.cfm?deptID=&prodID=4838&src=FPC

And when we camp during the warmer months, I will throw in 2 Potty Toddy tablets http://www.campingworld.com/browse/products/index.cfm?prodID=1635&src=SRQB

It seems to keep the odor down quite well.

I use the regular Thetford blue chemical.  I put 4 ounces in like the directions say.  If I don't use 4 ounces we have some problems with odors.:)

We have used mostly Thetford blue, and have had no problems with it.

I have also used the orange stuff, and it seems to be fine as well.

We have also used once (maybe twice) the stuff that is supposedly enzymes/bacteria, and will "eat" everything up. We were not impressed. In their defense, I MIGHT not have cleaned out the toilet good enough, and the chemicals in the other stuff can kill their bacteria. However, it got a good rinse before use. I may try it again on a week-long trip, so we can constantly monitor it (and use it, because it is a little expensive).

The others that are responding have standard porta-potties I believe.  The Electra-Magic is a recirculating toilet, and therefore needs additional help in that the "fluids" (initial charge of water and chem + anything humanly added) are recycled flush to flush.

With the standard porta-potties, the Thetford blue will work fine, but will quickly "sour" in a recirculating toilet.

JMHO.

we use the orange citrus one, (walmart) it works great in both our holding holding tanks

Thanks Civil War Buff. I was not aware of the scented Aqua-Kem. I'm going to pick some up, and I will try the Potty Toddy tablets on the next trip.

Thanks for the info everyone! :)

Okay, now I have a question. After reading these posts about all the different products people are using, I'm wondering if I'm using the right stuff. I have a cassette toilet in my PUP, and I just toss 1 Potty Toddy tablet in the cassette w/a small amount of water. We've used it on 2 weekend outings, and haven't noticed a problem with odor or anything. Is there something else I should be doing that I'm not? This is the first portable toilet of any type I've ever used, so just want to be sure I'm doing things correctly.

If yours is a C4 casstte... according to the owners manual, and my dealers instructions, when preparing it for use you should use 4 oz. of Aqua-Chem (or equivalant) and 2 liters (a half-gal.) of water in the holding tank.

Hey lushy,  no problem, that is one of the things that make this forum so valuable.  One more little tip for you that will give you more capacity on the toilet is not to fill it to the charge level, but test the flush as you are filling it, and stop when the toilet flushes normally.  I have found that I can get an additional 1 to 1-1/2 gallons more capacity.

I'm using (approx.) the 1/2 gal. of water, but I guess the question I still have is whether the Potty Toddy tablets are an acceptable substitute for the Aqua-Chem liquid, or are they something to be used in addition to the liquid? Don't they both do the same thing?

They do the same thing.  If you are not having a problem I would not change anything.  If you start smelling something unpleasant throw another tab in the toilet, although I doubt that you will need too.  They are supposed to handle 50 gallons of black water.:)

Great! Thanks, I really didn't want to change what I'm doing since it's so easy.

Civil War Buff, Thanks for the tip! I'll have to try that. I agree about this forum, it is great! Anytime I have a question, this is where I go. The forum has been the best place to get answers.

Here is something I do to get more capacity for the Electra Magic toilet. When I am getting to the "full" mark I open the termination on the bottom of the toilet which then dumps the contents into the line going to the dump valve on the outside (make sure your dump valve is closed!). This gives me some extra space when I am in a pinch. I have also purchased a 15 gallon portable tote which I will be utilizing this coming weekend.

Thanks again!
