Water heater problem

The last time we went camping we had some problems with our water heater not staying lit. Several times over the weekend the pilot light would go out but worked fine with the flame heating the tank but after it went back to idle the pilot light would extinguish. Our trailer is a 97 coleman niagara pop up. Any ideas what could be causing this??
