happy new year dee

we are making reservations as we speak for 2006.  So, I understand.  We are going to Santee Lakes next weekend.  Can't wait!  We are going rain or shine.

I too suffer from this not so rare form of mental illness  :( . My therapy is to spend the cold months planning for the springs camping trips and modification for the camper. I also search local stores for heavily discounted "stuff" for camping. I get no simpathy from my husband, who does not camp and can't understand the fever. I do however get the occasional disinterested, thats nice, when I show him some new camping gadget. Winter is way too long.

We got our "Therapy" this weekend. We went to Point MUGU for 3 days (was supposed to be 4).

Thurs & Fri were idyllic. Beautiful days and walks on the beach. Great campfires and listening to the surf while falling asleep. Saturday morning it rained for a few hours and was a fun, refreshing change. The ocean took on a new personality. We just sat in the PU, playing cards and watching the birds and even saw a whale. It cleared up and the evening was absolutely spectacular with clear, starlit skies and another perfect campfire with marsh-mellow skewers.

We heard that Sunday was going to be bad so we packed up just as it was starting to rain. Got home and it poured and blew pretty hard. That's a nice time NOT to be at Point Mugu.

We haven't got anything booked for the next couple months but if we get the urge, the beach is just a few miles away and reservations aren't necessary this time of year.

Pt Mugu... is that the one with the "street" along the sand around the corner from the big rock???  we use to go there all the time (I grew up in Newbury park)
The last I heard the transients had taken it over...but that was several years ago...now I'm talking in the  80's....OMG am I old or what???..... :yikes:

nobody answer that..... :eyecrazy:

2. money
3. have some Med things with Kevin and not sure yet where that's going
4. too cold in Jan. not to have a campfire

will have to get back to you on that...thanks

You're not alone, Viking.  :D

on the bright side Dee ~ it could be worse .... you could live in Minnesota where your camping season would be much shorter!  I haven't been camping since early October.   :p

No transients (unless you count us :p ).

It's been taken over by Diesel Pushers and 5th wheels. I had the only PU there.

The funny thing is, the best thing about that place is sleeping to the sound of the surf in your PU :tent: . I don't think that you could hear it in one of those hotels-on-wheels

We've been to almost all of the campsites from Doheny north to Pt Mugu. Our favorite is Leo Carrillo. We go to Pt Mugu often because we can go on the spur of the moment (it's usually not full), it's less than an hour from home, it's cheap ($11 per night winter) and we love being right on the beach. The only draw back is, the wind can blow REAL HARD :yikes:  there, as evidenced by the huge sand dune going up the side of the mountain, on the other side of the road. We've been there 3 times in the last 3 months and only got blasted once. The ranger said that was the hardest that he had seen it blow there.

As far as being cold.......it got down to 47 this weekend. The highs were in the 60s. Not exactly swimming or sun-bathing weather but the walks on the beach are great. It's also great frisbee throwing and camp fire weather. I don't think that there is any better winter camping in the country.

I noticed at Point Magu they have a dump station, do they have water & electric at the sites so I can plug in my "Hotel on Wheels"? LOL

Pt Mugu actually has 2 different camping areas. Thornhill Broome Beach is right on the beach and is completely dry camping. Not even water. They do have (very fancy :p ) portable toilets.

Sycamore Canyon is the other campsite. It is on the other side of the highway from the beach. It does have some sites with water but no electric hook-ups at all. However, I would recommend Leo Carrillo over Sycamore Grove any day. Especially for the "Hotel-on-wheels" :p . Although there is no electricity there either. They do have nice showers and restrooms though.

The trails at Leo Carrillo are spectacular.

BTW, the surf fishing at Pt Mugu is pretty good :D .
