Hello everyone,

I just joined a couple days ago after reading all the very helpful reviews that had been posted.  I Live in NY and needed help finding new campgrounds for this summer's trips.  So thank you to all of you who had nice things to say about Rollins pond/ Fish creek, I had not been camping their since i was 7 years old and i couldn't remeber anything besides going there.   We will also be going to Letchworth this summer.
If anyone has any more suggestions of parks/ campgrounds in NY please let me know.  I'd like to try out as many as I can before i start repeating old ones.

Thanks

We like Cranberry Lake, it gets high marks from ReserveAmerica too. Ditto Watkins Glen, the gorge walk is a must! Taughannock Falls was OK, the trail to the falls is nice. Lake Eaton was take it or leave it. We did Letchworth years ago over Memorial Day. Never again - drunken roudies were up until 3:00AM. I've heard others say Sampson State Park is nice, it's on our list to try.

North Pole is a private cg between Lake Placid & Wilmington, we've been there the last 2 years for leaf peeping the end of Sept / beginning of Oct. Nice people, an "adults only" rec room, clean facilities & lots to do in the area.

We've been camping at Sampson State Park, it was one of our better trips.  Take your bicycles, there are lots of unused roads giving you some nice rides.  Oak Orchard campground in Seneca Falls is a nice campground, but the bathroom facilities were sub-standard.  Don't stay here if you don't have on-board facilities.  The 2006 Rally will be at Hickory Hills campground in Bath, NY.  While I haven't stayed there, we've investigated the campground and found it to be very nice.  They have a new bathhouse that is of a newer design and very clean.

We go to Letchworth almost every year for a week in either July or August and always avoid holiday times. We love it! We bike and hike the FLT and enjoy walking to see the falls.

If you like to kayak, Moreau State Park near Saratoga Springs is nice. Also Luzerne State Park is good for kayaking, but the bathhouse is in major need for renovations.

Sacandaga Park in Wells, NY is also ok- it's fairly old bit it's located in an area where you can pick up lots of hiking trails.

Don't forget to try the Catskills- North-South Lake is very nice.

The Lake George area is really nice as well, with a selection of commercial campgrounds.

Lake George is east of the Adirondacs, near the Vermont border.

Last time we were there, we stayed at Lake George RV Park.  It's really nice around Columbus Day when the leaves are in full color.

Camping in NY is great, except for our short camping season!  There are also so many campgrounds that there just isn't time to check them all out!  Our favorites are:

1.  Sun Valley in Arkport.....the kids love to swim and hike through the waterfalls, planned activities, fully stocked store, arcade, ice cream stand, etc.

2.  Brennan Beach in Pulaski.....plenty to do with a beach, 3 pools, basketball courts, golf, arcade, store, snack shop, live bands, etc.

3.  Norwins in Lyons.....small, homey place with planned activities, a small store and arcade and a nice pool; really nice folks running the place.

4.  Letchworth State Park, Mount Morris....always a guarantee of a good time, we stay in the 700 loop since we bring our dog, kids always love just biking around the loop.

We have a few others that we liked just fine, but I don't know if we would say they are "favorites".  If you want more specifics, I have websites for dozens of campgrounds all around New York and I have a book of all the state parks that have camping, so let me know if I can help!

Take care!

I'm new to this message board, I've been looking back through some older threads. Thought I'd add a few places to the list.

Highbanks Campground: http://www.highbankscamping.com/default.asp

Very nice campground run by the Seneca Nation of Indians.  It's in western NY near the PA border.  We've been going there for years.  Boat launch & access to Allegheny Reservior, newer pool, store & playground.  Bathrooms are OK, not sparkling clean but in good working order.   The cabins are usually filled with partiers, so if you want a quieter family vacation, I'd recommend sites 18-26, or 111 - 127. (Click on "reservations" on their site to see the campground map.)  Sites are private & wooded for the most part.  Nearby attractions:  Allegany State Park, the casino, and several areas for fishing, hiking & boating.

Beaverkill State Park:

In the Catskills.  If you like camping right next to a gorgeous flowing stream, this is the place for you.  Very quiet, direct access to the stream for fishing, wading, photos, etc.  We were warned that if it rained hard the stream could flood & they would have to move us, but that didn't happen.  There's a gorgeous covered bridge & some hiking trails in the park itself, plus several more hiking options nearby.  We hiked to the top of one of the small Catskill Peaks when we were there.
