Hi Gang,
I always hear good reviews about Weight Distribution Hitches. I

Quote from: Gone CampingWithout the WDH the PU and the TV are fairly independent, one bounces along independently without much effect on the other (unless on a real bumpy road),

NOT!  The primary purpose of a WDH is to distribute (equalize) the tongue weight among all three axles.  With dead weight on the ball, (without the WDH), the suspension in the rear of the TV is overstressed, and the weight on the front suspension is reduced.  You have significantly less steering capacity with a heavy tongue without a WDH.

In addition, there is a good deal more bouncing in the TV without the WDH as the rear shocks have to deal with the added mass of the trailer tongue weight.

Quotehowever when joined with a WDH it seems to me that one does affect the other because of the more rigid connection between the two.

Let me know what you experienced WDH people think.

The spring bars are springs because they have to flex.  That flexing absorbs most of the negative consequences of havingn that more-or-less rigid connection.

But to the specific question you asked:  We find significantly less porposing (bouncing up and down) with the WDH, and because our hitch has sway control built in, it is also much more stable with regard to trailer sway.

Fully connected, I think the ride in the van is slightly better than without the trailer at all.  "It's an Astro, and it rides like a truck because, well, because underneath it's a truck."

Austin, thank you.

Another Astro owner here ...

I can't use WDH with my PU ... Jayco sez so ... I looked into using it to relieve the stress on the rear axle of the van.

There's that name again!! Have to say, I like your handle...

I didn't use a WDH when I had the PU, but now that I'm in a Hybrid I have to admit that I'd be lost without it, and now that I've experienced what it does and how well it does it, I kind of wished I had tried one with the PU...

My Hybrid has a very heavy tongue weight, and the Jeep has weak rear springs, and without the WDH it'd have major squat problems. I put three links on the chains and everything sit's nice and level....I'm totally impressed with it...!

OK-They are safer, and make towing easier. What are the costs? Do they take much time to hook up? Are they difficult to hook up? Can you back into spaces with cobo wdh/sway control units hooked up?Can/should they be used with all makes of pop ups, folding trailers, tts, and hybrids? Why not? Are they expensive to purchase and install?

I have an Equal-i-zer WDH setup.

Unlike normal WDH's this one has built in sway control as well as pitch/yaw (rotational sway)... which they call "4-point sway control".

Thus, hitching up with this one unit, is much easier, and gives far more stability than a WDH with added sway bars.

Works pretty darn well - even in high winds on curvy roads, my trailer was more stable than any I've towed in the past (with and without separate sway bars).

And, it is so easy to hook up, that my wife will do it (she would not touch the previous setups).  Of course, she's also happy I put an electric tongue jack on it!
