Weatherstripping Adhesive

I've been trying to reattach my rubber weatherstripping on the back of the ABS roof of our Utah.

I have used 3M weatherstripping adhesive/ after cleaning and sanding the rubber.

I've tried this about 3 straight times, using alcohol to clean it, sanding the old adhesive down to the rubber and on the roof molding.  Surfaces are roughened, clean, and dry.

So far, nothing has held up.  I really don't want to epoxy it on...

Ideas?

Are you using 3M 8001? The yellow "snot" (they used to call it).

You just put a thin layer on the W/S and a layer on the other surface. Let is dry for about 10-15 minutes. Stick 'em together and that "Should" do it. We used that to glue door W/S on cars for the last 30 years. Usually works great.

Yes, the yellow stuff with the bad case of toulene.  I, too, have used it for years with NO problem on cars...

I wonder if the W/S that you are working with may not be rubber. Could it possibly be plastic or have a high silicone content?

Some of that plastic stuff is bad business to get anything to adhere to it. As I understand it, like some of the auto urethane bumper covers, a silicone mold release agent was used during the manufacturing process and that silicone leaches out. You might try an auto body repair shop supply store that will have an adhesion promoter just for plastics.

That actually was part of the rationale for the sanding/roughening (plastics/oils, silicones).  I don't think the weatherstripping itself is the fail point, I think it is (as Waverly noted) that plastic lip adhered to the ABS.

You know, I might just call a body shop that I've used to see if they know what I might be running into.  Thanks!

I went and got a new tube of the 3M adhesive, let both sides cure for about 10 minutes and reattached (after having roughed up both surfaces) after putting another thin layer of adhesive down.  So far, it has held and not separated.

Why my year old tube didn't do it, who knows, but the new one did.

Thanks for the input.
