Quote from: abbearI just went to the local hardware store and got 2 nails that are about 8-9" long to use for tent stakes. When the ground is rock hard they work where the plastic stakes won't. If the ground won't hold the nails it probably won't hold the stakes anyway.
I usually use metal tent stakes.  When camping in sandy soil I use stakes that are 15 or 18 inches long.:)

Quote from: tknickI have a 2002 Coleman Bayside with the factory installed awning.  We bought the trailer used and I'm starting to think we didn't get everything we should have with the awning.    I don't have any instructions for it's setup.

I understand the three poles and how they fit into the bar at the end of the awning.  I am guessing I should have some stakes or screws to go into the ground because there are some ropes with wooded handles on the ends that I don't know what to do with.

I remember seeing some people that made flower pots or other things to put the poles in.  Any links to those mods would be appreciated as well.

thanks

We use flower pots filled with concrete to stablize the legs of our awning and hold it down.  I seldom need to use the tie down ropes (This means that the kids can't trip or clothesline themselves when running around camp)

Hope this is helpful.

cheers,
mike

Check out this link for a different way of mounting the uprights.  It gets rid of stakes, ropes, flower pots, everything!  Awning is mounted a la travel trailer and motorhome style.  Looks pretty neat to me.

Pretty cool mods on that PU. I especially like the TV antenna and satellite dish that he has on top of that PU. :p .

Very clever mods for the awning. I wonder how he managed to spend even $60 on it? I don't see more than about $15 in parts.

I wouldn't do this mod, however, because I like to use our Add-a-Room.

Didn't see that until you mentioned it, maybe because I'm more interested in leaving that stuff behind.  Are you sure it's on the camper roof?  Looks like it might be a bit distant, as though mounted on a roof or free standing tower.  I don't see anything in his other mods concerning TV or satellite.

The rain setup on the awning, though, looks a little dangerous.  Opening the door could rip the awning, although I would think he's already thought of that.

I wonder if he's on this forum somewhere.

I had considered this mod a few years ago and decided not to.  We often enter and exit the camper by the end of the awning and don't walk out around the front of the awning.  The poles would be in the way.:)

That was my feeble attempt at humor :p

It does seem to be in the background. I just thought that it looked funny :p .
