I have a 1997 Coleman Westlake.  The bag that the awning stores in on the roof came detatched from the roof.  The RV store is trying to sell me 2 manufactor repair kits (special glue, basically and he said I would need two) costing about $60-$70.00.   Does any body have any better advice, or is this the best way to go?

Thanks!

Are you talking about the awning rail (that the awning bag itself slides into) that is attached to the side of the roof ...?

Sorry, the bag and the plastic rail are still attached to one another.  They came detached from the camper roof.  So I need to reglue the plastic rail to the camper and I am not sure of the right adhesive to use.

Usually when your installing the awning you feed the awning bag into the awning rail (usually has a short rope on the end of the awning bag) and when it's where you think it out to be, you screw a couple of sheet metal screws right through the awning bag and into the rail to keep the awning right at that location. The first thing to do would be to remove those screws and seperate the awning bag from the rail so all you have to work with is the thin awning rail itself. Next, the area where the rail is going to be re-glued on the roof, plus the flat side of the awning rail itself, has to be cleaned THROUGHLY using a solvent cleaned.

The price of that adhesive they are trying to sell you sounds steep ... do you know if it's a 2-part adhesive, like an epoxy where you have to mix part A with Part B ... or is it a single stage adhesive, like a contact cement?

I'm confused   (as usual).

My rail is made of aluminum. I don't think that I have seen one made of plastic.

I am guessing that you have an ABS roof.  There is a special type of glue that is used for gluing stuff to ABS.  Are you the original owner?  If you are then your roof has a life time warranty on it.  I would push for Fleetwood to supply the glue.  They may not do it as the rail is not part of the roof, but you can give it a try.  I don't have the contact information, but you could contact 3M and see if they have an ABS glue you could use.  Fleetwood really marks stuff up.http://www.3m.com/us/mfg_industrial/adhesives/

This may be what you want, but check with 3M first.:)

We bought the unit used 2 years ago.  We just bought a different trailer and have sold the Coleman to a neighbor.  We have a few minor repairs to do before we offically sell it to them.  Since they are our friends, we want to fix the awning correctly so it will hold up for them.

Thanks for the info!
