This has probably been asked/answered before, but my search did not bring anything applicable up.

I need to waterproof my tenting on the PUP. I left her up in the rain all day to see how she did, and there are some areas of concern. One area let water in completely (drips/droplets on inside), and there were a few other areas that were just damp. The good news is that all of the canvas patches that I have put on worked like a charm!! No leaks or dampness at all.

I have used Scotch-Guard on other fabrics with some success, but didn't know if it would work on the tenting or if I need to go more "industrial strength".

Any and all comments are welcome!!

before we got our Bayside, we had an 83 coleman PU with the older style canvas tenting.  I used waterproofing spray I found in the camping aisle at Wallyworld with acceptable results.  Not necessarily a ringing endorsement, but the only thing I have any experience with.

hope that helps

We have a 91 Palomino with canvas that was replaced just prior to us purchasing the PUP. With no tags as to material type I plan on trying the tenting Wally World sealant with the seam sealer.  We'll watch this thread to see what advice you receive and maybe we'll find a better way..  :)

I treated the canvas with a product called "CAMP DRY".  It's a spray on silicone based water repelant.

Worked well for us with no bad effects.

What is the tenting on your trailer?  different tentings use different waterproofing stuff.:)

You may have already puchased an off the shelf product but maybe this will help someone else. The folks at Vangaurd Ind. put me onto Camper & Recreation Inc. I have used their 22oz Water Repwellent on my 1980 Palomino Colt and it stays perfectly dry in all kinds of weather. Some off the shelf products are not compatible with the original waterproofing. I'v heard silicone based products are not a good choice for some canvase's?

My Fleetwood dealer doesn't stock the product need to rewaterproof the Sunbrella tenting on my camper.  They order it as needed so I called ahead when I needed to rewaterproof my PU.  You need to use 303's Hi Tech Fabric Guard or a similar product on Sunbrella.

The Cape Cod had the sunbrella tenting. As I said, no problems.

The only warning on the can said that it could "darken" the fabric.

The Roo has more of a vinyl fabric, and I haven't used anything on it yet.

A trip we made last October, I could've used waterproofing inside, a lot of condensation!!

Have since used my solar covers on every trip!

Sunbrella tenting breaths.  I would think a silicone product would seal the material and stop it from breathing.

From Sunbrella's web site.

"We suggest that after Sunbrella fabrics are cleaned and if they remain exposed to the elements constantly and water repellency is a factor that you retreat your Sunbrella fabrics with a water repellent treatment such as 303 High Tech Fabric Guard

So, what contitutes a "thorough cleaning"?  I clean ours with water only.  I'll leave the PUP set up through a couple days of rain then wipe it down with a cloth before it dries.  The rain soaks the dirt and makes it easy to wipe it off.

"If you are cleaning Sunbrella while still on an awning frame or a boat, follow these simple steps:
  • Brush off loose dirt.
  • Hose down.
  • Prepare a cleaning mixture of water and mild soap (no detergents).
  • Use a soft bristle brush to clean.
  • Allow soap to soak in.
  • Rinse thoroughly.
  • Air dry.
If stubborn stains persist, you can use a diluted chlorine bleach/soap mixture for spot cleaning of mildew, roof run-off or other similar stains (see our Stain Chart for specific recommendations).
Prepare a special cleaning mixture:

  • Eight ounces (one cup) of chlorine bleach.
  • Two ounces (one-fourth cup) of mild soap.
  • One gallon of water.
  • Clean with soft bristle brush.
  • Allow mixture to soak for up to 20 minutes.
  • Rinse thoroughly.
  • Air dry.
  • Repeat if necessary. "
