You know, there are kids that go to college to party and there are kids that go there to learn. Your son sounds like the latter.

I have been managing this apartment building for 8 years now. We are located 4 blocks from Cedars Sinai Medical Center and just a few miles from UCLA. I get all kinds of students in my building. I've gotten to where I can tell the partiers after talking to them for 10-15 minutes. I want no part of them.

I've had to evict a few of them and just finished getting rid of 2 girls that I thought were going to be great. Their parents came with them from Minnesota to get them settled in an apartment because they didn't want them exposed to the dorms at UCLA. They seemed like real responsible people. Boy was I wrong on that one. What a disappointment. They weren't here 2 months and they invited some young people over (that lived in the dorms). BAD mistake. They ended up with so many people, drunk and out of control (throwing beer bottles in the street.....in Beverly Hills......not smart) that I had to call the police. LONG story..... anyway, they moved out this last weekend. Mom & Dad, flew back down to relocate them and couldn't understand why I would ask these 2 innocent girls to leave. I felt like telling them that the 2 "innocent" girls often entertained 2 or more innocent young men until 3 or 4 in the morning at which time they would leave, loud and drunk.

Sorry for the rant :(  this just isn't that kind of building. I have mostly doctors and lawyers that live here and they live here because it is a beautiful, peaceful environment.

Anyway, the long & short of it is, if your son's going to get an apartment, make sure to tell him not to invite people over that live in the dorms. It gets out of control 9 times out of 10. They know that they can't party in the dorms. One whisper of a "gathering" of 2 or more people in an apartment off campus and it can quickly become 200 people. That's one of the down-sides of Berkly. That's a real party town.

Congrats, you guys!

My vote for housing is always the dorms, at least for the first 2 years.  Gives kids a chance to settle down & focus on academics instead of surviving in their own house.  Now, Lori, I KNOW you're the exception to everything, so just remember that not everyone's like you ...   ;)

darksiders

congratulations!!!!  That's great news.  It's nice he's staying in CA.  You'll save some $$ by not leaving the state.  I'm sure Jason will pick the right school for him.

Ummmm Laura........Dorms, settle down, and focus on acedemics should not even be in the same paragragh. This is college! Some of the best parties I've ever been to have been in the dorms at ASU !!!!

Hey Dave,

That is wonderful.  I have to say, we're partial to Berkeley.  My DH graduated from there.  We love it up there.  We'll probably be up there next school year for the "big game".  GO BEARS, indeed!!

I'll be anxious to hear..............

Jason just got back from UC Santa Cruz and UC Berkeley and he's pretty sure he's going to Berkeley. I've told him to get me football tickets for the "Game" and when USC plays Cal. It should be fun to take MY HARLEY UP to No. Cal.

Thanks for all the kind words.

Hey, Lori (Griffsmom) did you read Dave's post?  Did he say hybrid?    Ooohh, you are getting a hybrid, you are getting a hybrid.  Hooray!!!

Dave, when you come up to visit, you can camp at Lake Chabot.  It's only about 30 mins. away from Cal.  And if you want company, we'll show up and light a campfire for you.

LOL!!!! :J You got him, girl! Yes, I saw Dave's post before he tried to rewrite history but didn't have time to post before he changed it. He did cheat, but it doesn't surprise me at all. Dave's personal motto is "If you ain't cheating--you ain't trying!" No, really truly, that's his motto.

Up to this point, we have been thinking about either the Starcraft Travelstars or the Rockwood Roos. The Starcraft Travelstar 21SB or 23SBS both seem to be well made with floorplans that we like, but the interior height is only 6'4 and the a/c unit comes down from the ceiling about 3"--a prime target for Dave's forehead since he is 6'5" Plus the beds are only 57 x 76"--again too small for that big 'ol drink-of-water I married.

The Roos, on the other hand, have an interior height of 6'6" and the a/c unit is ducted and flush to the ceiling. The beds are 60 x 80. We like the 23SS but haven't been able to see one in person. I called a dealer out in Beaumont (about 65 miles from our home) and they finally have one on the lot. If possible, maybe we'll be able to go see it this Saturday after Griffin's t-ball game. You know, "just to look"....(hint, hint, Dave.) :D

Boy do 2 minds think alike.  The 23SS is the model we liked too.  Of couse we have never seen one up close yet.  For some reason it is hard to find hybrids up here.  Most of the campers are the hard slide like the Outback and the KZ.  We decided to wait till maybe next year.  We need to put in the RV access on the side of the house before we buy.  We already have the concrete pad but still need to do the gate and the treads thru the front lawn.  Everytime we go camping with other people I crave a new camper.  There is just so much more room and comfort in the hybrid.  SIGH!!

Ha!  We went to that same dealer "just to look" and left 2 hours later w/our new baby!  CONGRATS!!! (My mottos is Think Positive!) I saw Dave's post and thought "Hmmm...shouldn't be long now!"  Wave to us as you pass Beaumont Ave - that's our exit!

The dealer is Discount RVs. They also have locations in Homeland, Banning and a couple of other places that are way out there. Kristi, did you and Dan like dealing with them? Did you feel that you got a good deal? I've also called West Coast RVs, a Roo dealer in Pomona, which is much closer to our home, but they don't have the 23SS in stock and don't expect to order it unless someone comes in and wants to buy it. Maybe we can look at the model out in Beaumont and then buy it from whichever dealer will give us the better deal. West Coast has always been nice and helpful on the phone and have confirmed a couple of different times that they would service an rv bought at a different dealer. So I guess we'll just have to see. I sure would love to show up at Flying Flags or Guajome with a new camper!!!

If we're able to go "look" this weekend, we'll be sure to wave and even honk--so open your windows!! :D
